How do you EQualize your Virus?

I would like to know if you equalize your virus using:

- its own eq
- the software (DAW)
- hardware mixer
- other solutions

It's interesting to know if you use the 2 remaining stereo outputs too and if you equalize them separately; if you record your tracks as audio, or you leave them as midi into the 16 virus channels.

Good questions.

There are different kinds of Equalizers and they all can be used differently to achieve different results.
Also EQ's utilize different filter types such as
High Pass
Low Pass
Band Pass (HI + Low)
Band reject/ band stop/ notch
Peaking/ Bell
Shelving EQ - Low and High Shelf


There are 3 band EQ
Semi parametric EQ
Fully parametric EQ
Graphic EQ

The virus has a a Low and High Shelf EQ along with a Parametric Mid Band.

Hardware consoles (MOst Affordable ones) come with a similar configuration of High and Low shelving and a semi parametric or fully parametric Mid band

You could buy a hardware EQ too, but it will probably be for a single or 2 channels. SO You would have to use it separately on all your tracks and probably record back as audio through your interface or use it as an insert on your hardware console and then bring it back into your DAW through the interface.

Your DAW comes with ALL, including Fully parametric EQ's. This gives you a lot more shaping flexibility.

It is a good idea to bounce down your virus channels as audio to be able to use the virus channels for more sounds. IT will also help you to free up some processor power on the virus. It will also help you to build a library of audio samples that you can use later in other projects. Also You can work with audio in different and creative ways, after finishing up with the midi stuff.
Regarding the analog outputs, I use mostly the USB outs and not the analog outs, although the Analog outs would be great to use.
YOu would have to connect them to 2 channels on your audio interface (inputs) and assign them to 2 empty mono channels or 1 stereo channel in your DAW. Then YOu would have to record them as Audio.


Make sure you finish automating and tweaking the sounds before committing them to audio. save your midi channels to come back later if you need to make changes..also save the patches you create on the virus. Save it all within your project.

I'm experimenting with recorded samples from virus patches, and the possibilities are very creative, i really need a library of sounds now.

The midi & audio setup is the best solution, but sometimes the multi single mode is a little bit confusing (i change and tweak every patch so organizing them is difficult).

as a little side note, i often play random sounds on the TI and do hands on modulation of the envelopes whilst recording the audio into a track in my DAW. Then i go to town editing/processing/timestretching/cutting and turning that original sample into something mangled beyond belief, then building loops from that. It can open a lot of doors for inspiration, and if you work on certain genres (dnb for example) most synth tones are processed/multibanded/bussed to create the desired sounds.

If I have one sound per Virus TI output (ie USB 1, USB 2, USB 3) then I will always try DAW eq instead of TI patch eq.
If I have two or more sounds per output then I will group them accordingly, eq in the DAW and use a bit of low cut in the TI patch or mid bump, I find the treble on the TI a bit false and quick way to loose some shine.
Now lately I noticed with the TI distortions that the patch eq might be pre distortion, that's my feeling anyway, then the patch eq comes into play with the character of the distortions.

As to the DAW eq, I may use waves Linear phase eq or MeldaProduction MEqualizerLinearPhase, which gives you the choice to switch between linear and normal eq.
