I had an projector.. And Sony VCSP-40 (I think it was called!), It was _great_ to have it. I could get a picture that covered the most part of my livingroomwall; ~4 meters * 2.5 meters.
My and Ausa used to play Mario Kart 64 and Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance (and other games too of course) and just watching movies were great too!
Saving Private Ryan sure was better to watch in this way than on my 21" TV.
Unfornuate my dad gave away my projector! He met a girl that had a 8-year old son, and my dad borrowed the projector from me and.. Well, that was ~3-4 years ago and I've still haven't gotten it back and since my dad and his ex don't talk.
I'd love to have another projector but the problem is that you always gotta be able to darken the whole room, which during the summer is almost impossible if you don't modify the room to "cinema-room", and just because that you can buy an cheap projector doesn't mean that it's any good and my old projector almost sounded like an jetmotor.. It was loud!

We've got these Panasonic projectors hung from the classroom ceilings at school but they're bloody noisy. I find myself having to talk like a sergeant major over one.
Can they really project such a sharp image as a TV and silently? What models and how much?

I use one of these projectors regularly for a current client when I am doing presentations and training for them. The resolution and laptop display is pretty good - 1600*1200, but I do find I need to reduce that for my audience to be able to read it. I usually step it down to something like 1280 * 1086. I find the image is very sharp, but haven't seen TV projected onto the wall with one of these.
Maybe I'll do a bit of a test this week with playing a DVD on my laptop on it. I am delivering a few training sessions in London this week and will have opportunity to test this out.

I'm sure most of the newer projectors are quiet compared to the models of a few years ago. They are much smaller too.
Check out these two sites for general info and specs:

The DELL outlet kicks ass. I got a great laptop from them a month ago. Their deals on LCD monitors are great too. The DELL outlet sells everything from PCs, laptops, MP3 players, and of course...projectors...
None of these items are used. The used inventory is sold from "DELL Financial Services" when corporate leases expire and inventory is returned.

Agreed.
I wish I could produce Chemical Brothers drums too!
