I don't have the TI, but on my C the inputs work exactly as you want them to.
The appegiator is great for using on the inputs. You can have the appegiator running the filters only for example, which will give you a nice gated/slicer effect - very cool on vocal lines. I think reading the manual regarding external inputs will help you.
