You don't have to set the tempo in the Virus itself if you are syncing to an external clock. Even if you set the tempo of the Virus internaly, an external clock will automaticly change the Virus tempo anyway.
It's really hard to try and solve your problem over the net though. I have never had any problem with latency when syncing any of my gear with my sequencer and I'm not sure where to start. Having to record to audio then move around the file to get it in time would be such a hassle I can't even imagine! Really hope you get it sorted out and sorry I can't be of more help.
