Graindance and Plasmatron Challenge - Graindance Voting!

Graindance Voting

The 'Plasmatron and Graindance Challenge' was a competition where forum users were free to design their own patches to best fit the names 'Plasmatron' and 'Graindance' - both fictional preset names as featured in promotional screenshots for the Access TI-Snow and TI2!

Users submitted a short audio demo (which you can listen to below, in the poll), as well as their patches (included below).

On this page everyone can vote for their favourite Graindance entry! (Please also vote for your favourite entries in the separate Plasmatron poll.)

Voting Rules:

• Please don't vote for your own entry. Choose your favourite from someone else's. If others think yours are good, they will vote for you in return, and it will all balance out! It keeps things more dynamic.
• Vote for the one that you think best fits the name 'Graindance'.
• I will check new accounts, IPs, proxies, etc. for dodgy voting, so in the interests of fairness please don't attempt it!

Without further ado, here are the Graindance entries!:-

Brambos [BB] - [Graindance mp3] [patch]
Ceri JC [CJC] - [Graindance mp3] [patch]
GJVTI [GJVTI] - [Graindance mp3] [patch]
HiEnergy [HR] - [Graindance mp3] [patch]
Matt van K [MvK] - [Graindance mp3] [patch]
Timo [Timo] - [Graindance mp3] [patch]

Thanks to Ceri CJ, all of the patches in the whole competition (both Plasmatron and Graindance) are available in one bank!

I was able to get them on my other laptop. Stellar Sounds. Having a hard time voting.

Timo, killer patch
Good work, everyone else. Too bad, I didn't have time for this :(

It took a few listens to each, but it was really the evolution of GJVTI's Graindance over the course of the sample that really separated it from the rest. Grainy, Dancey, fancy, shmancy. This is a sound I would use, and I think it best fits the name.

I will have to admit, though, that my initial image tied to the "Graindance" name was more "Rain Dance" and I was thinking of this long line of Irish step-dancers kicking and shuffling about. Then I realized that was River Dance....

Did I type that out loud?

Juho L 04.03.2009 05:10 AM

I also went for that raindance intuition and there were two really good patches that I liked. Tough call.

Damn. I'd enjoyed to participate this contest, but no dice.

brambos 04.03.2009 09:51 AM

Votes cast... difficult call! Some really very usable sounds in this competition.

I really like the wide spectrum of interpretations of the patch names - and the reverse-engineered-creative-process of designing a patch for an inspiring name, rather than the typical other way around. :)

telson 04.03.2009 11:59 AM

i vote brambos here :p ;)

Alakhai 04.03.2009 12:49 PM

Indeed. Awesome patch. Got my vote.. like someone said earlier, the tweaking at the end of the sample sealed the deal ;)

Have you tried clicking on the patch-link with your right mouse-button? Then choose "Save Target as". That should do the trick.

Alakhai 04.03.2009 01:05 PM

ok it was my shitty browser, I came back with firefox and downloaded it :)

Interesting; because of my background in the genre IDM (AKA Braindance) I'd always assumed everyone would assume it was a corruption of "Braindance", playing on the use of graintables. Funny how much preconceptions alter what we think. :)

blairwillis 05.03.2009 01:41 AM

And now everyone knows about my secret past as an Irish step-dancer. ;)

I do wish I'd participated. ...in the sound design contest, not the step-dancing.

Doc Jones 05.03.2009 03:37 AM

pretty f*kin cool patches guys.

gjvti 05.03.2009 06:23 AM

Well, It was pretty easy to pick out two patches here but tough choice from these two. One has excellent example from its developer, but another provided better tweakability (with three knobs and modulation) when I played with it yesterday. Hard decision, but finally made my choice for tweakability, although another one is probably even better match to the name given.

MAX 06.03.2009 01:56 PM

Voted for Timo

Man, that's just the Graindance I imagined it should be!!!!

Thank you all for this little fun. It´s nice to hear all.

@Timo, your Access Virus (Indigo-b) rocks very cool.
Some people think the b is the best of the series.I don´t know why but i think it´s because of the easy to used filter-section with paralell/serial buttons and the envelope knobs.

And i must say the Classic b is very very sexy:)

Timo 10.03.2009 01:26 PM

Another very close race. Last day of voting today, make it count!

Timo 11.03.2009 05:28 PM

And the 7-day polls have elapsed!

The winners for this round are:

Plasmatron: Shortbus [Plasmatron mp3] [patch] [Virus TI OS v2.7)
Graindance: Timo [Graindance mp3] [patch] (Virus Indigo mk1)

A very close running competition all the way through. A really amazing and diverse set of patches, well done to everyone who entered.

Again all of the patches entered (Graindance & Plasmatron) are compiled into one bank and are available for download here: [Graindance & Plasmatron Bank] (right-click, "Save as..")

Shortbus, if you want to PM myself I'll pass your details onto Marc in order to receive your prize. :) Well done.

Massive thanks to everyone who entered and voted. Hopefully we can do this again at some point, or make it into a regular event? Post your thoughts!

ShortBus 11.03.2009 07:09 PM

The reason went with a varying speed pulse sound was because Plasma made me think of guns or ghosts(ectoplasm) so I ended up with kinda a ghostbusters pulse canon bass. Congradulations to Timo on his patch. Thanks to everyone for their patches and votes. Next patch name should be "Infekted"

Great Idea!

What about "contest time" once a month...?

ShortBus 11.03.2009 10:10 PM

Three weeks to come up with the patch one week to vote?

Great idea. Perhaps with a companion patch "Inokulated" ;)

Congratulations to the Shortbus and Timo, and thanks to all for the inspiration!

Yes can we do it again, I wished I'd entered! Unfortunately the wife has been ill in hospital so I missed it:(

do this again = great! but only when we have a good name-idea to start with, let's not make it a "regular" event without pathos. and btw, we're not giving away too many t-shirts, aren't we? :D

congratulations to the winners anyway. cheerz guys ;)

brambos 12.03.2009 03:28 PM

Yeah.. great stuff.

I think we should do this again (not too often, because we might get competition-fatigue, but just frequently enough to keep us on our toes).

Hopefully next time even more people will feel inspired/confident enough to join.

Meanwhile I'll be enjoying my new Graindance/Plasmatron bank with lots of really usable new patches!

Thanks guys - and congratulations Timo and Shortbus, two well-deserved victories!

blairwillis 13.03.2009 01:57 AM

+1 More sound design contests.

I'm looking forward to crafting an entry. Monthly or Quarterly?

Contests could follow a theme, such as the names Infekted and Inokulated mentioned above, or use of a specific feature, like best patch using the new tape delay effect, or other themed ideas.

Perhaps we should start a thread on future contest theme ideas?

Ceri JC 30.03.2009 01:35 PM

Congratulations all, two very deserving winners there. Great sounds!

+1. I think we should first have a bit of a brainstorm (there's a patch name ;)), to determine different themes/ideas for future competitions and then periodically pick one of those for people to do. I don't think it should be too frequent (perhaps quarterly) as I can imagine that otherwise after a couple, people will lose interest and the numbers of submissions will drop.

Perhaps the previous winner could have the final say in the theme for the next one, once people have had a chance to make suggestions?

Xenious 10.05.2009 08:55 PM

:( I haven't been on the forum in too long and I missed the vote. But just so they know HiEnergy was my fav! Awesome work.
