Well, its true that they have a semi-pro reputation, plus these new Sony HMD or something (1 gig capacity's) record high quality and are cheap

No point in recording 24bit, if you are using an internal 'stereo' mic :P

Depends...the recordings i've heard on their site are actually really good. Anyone know any alternatives to this? I mean, i know i dont need the fx but it seems that this is the only good(new) recorder on the market to me.

To record. You see, i dont have a labtop, and i dont want to be limited to only home recordings. I want to be able to bring it places, record atmospheres ect.

I would say that spending your money on this would be a complete waste.

You would be better off buying a portable DAT recorder, and a decent stereo/MS rig. Perhaps something like Rode NT4.

You wont get the desired results with something like this, it will be sub-par.

I didn't say it was shitty.

Newer portable Sony Hi-MD Minidisc systems can record in high quality.

Either in uncompressed PCM (wav-like) format or as 256kbps ATRAC3, which is pretty much equal to mp3.

Not that a 24-bit digital recorder is much use for an internal mic anyway... :P

Oh and each 'Hi-MD' Minidisc is 1GB. A lot more capacity than this Edirol comes with.

Does that sonY contraption actually play mp3 or does it convert them on upload?

Sony allways seemed to have something against mp3 in the past and kept trying to push their own format.

Ive been looking for a convenient contraption for capturing ideas etc.
