Default not sure what destinations "Contr12, Contr13" etc. are

are those solely for automation within a DAW or?...........

Do you mean modulation sources - Controller 09, 12, 13 etc.? These simply refer to generic MIDI continuous controller (CC) numbers. MIDI CC data can be generated by a MIDI controller or drawn directly in a DAW. Using the mod matrix, you can program a single controller (fader or knob or one of the Virus' "soft knobs") to affect up to 24 sound parameters.

I've never seen these controllers listed as destinations, though...

Indeed. If you use those as sources on the Mod Matrix, you can also then assign them for the soft knobs on the panel and control a lot of parameters at once that way - that's one of the great uses for it. Be sure to try this, it's great fun!

Like said above, it's also a general midi CC - so you're able to assign it to a midi controller or automate it from within the DAW.
