Dunkel,
Lets hear that mangling you have been doing. If you can, post a before and after clip. I am interested to hear the filters.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but I wanted to chat about the filter bank. Hope that's cool Onkel.

Well.... Finally.... I am planning to sell the Virus to get a Sherman.
The day has finally come to get rid of the VC - I only use it as a filter box recently anyway.

So, how is the filter bank going Onkel, and is there anything I should know before getting one?
You have had yours for a while now, so I thought you'd be a good person to ask.

It´s quite a special filter. There´s nothing like it. I´m sure you will like it but it´s not a filter for everyone. If you like it dirty (and i know you do ) you will love the filterbank. No "clean" or "nice" filtering here. The input overdrives very easy in a very nasty way. It has very good modulation possibilities but mine is the old tabletop version and i have mounted it in my rack so it´s hard getting to the inputs and outputs on the back. Consider this when you choose if it will be the tabletop or rackmount edition (the rackmount has all the jacks on the front). I would love the love to have the rack version instead. Especially because there´s a very usefull input for triggering the envelope. If the sound level haven´t decayed to less than the trigger level before for the next note, the envelope will think that you didn´t trigger a new note. This can be a pain but can be worked around with the ADSR trigger input or by triggering it by MIDI. Another great thing: On most filter you are forced to choose from LP, BP or HP but not on the filterbank. You can have anything in between. Swithing between serial and parrallel is the same; anything goes. One smaller anoying thing is that only some of the parameters are controlable via MIDI...

Tip: Try running drumloops through it and tweak away

Hello,

I sold my Virus C to fund purchasing a Sherman Filterbank 2.

It's fantastic, the sounds you get from it are so random.

I put a really rubbish drum loop through it and the end result just brings a smile to your face.

I also like to just use a very basic synth sound and see what happens. I'm currently enjoying putting the Mopho through it.

The only thing that I would warn about is that I had to buy a limiter to put before my MOTU 828mk2 and the Filterbank as there was only a hairs width between triggering the envelopes and distorting the inputs on the MOTU. It was almost unusable for me until I got the limiter. This might just be my set-up but a limiter is still wise as it is capable of some extreme frequencies.

Cheers,

Dave.

Yep, I really think this is the way to go. I am pissed to lose so much cash from the Virus, but what can you do.

I have read through a fair chunk of the manual regarding the way that the thing triggers, and I am pretty sure I can route this in an effective way to get predictable results.

Love the sound on the demos I have heard, but this will be one of those things that will be bought without a hands on as no shops around me have them in stock at the moment.

Starting to look like real fun is ahead though!

I have a FB2 and find it much easier running it into a mixer before it goes back into the computer.
Like Logic Circuit was saying, the output has no volume control so it can easily clip the inputs of your soundcard.

It sounds amazing on drum loops and basslines.
For more subtle filtering on synth sounds you have to trigger it with midi or a separate audio signal because the input level required to trigger the gate already has a fair bit of distortion.
