Default Roland Jupiter 4

Who has used a Jupiter 4?

DS? you have an opinion.

There's one going quite cheap in decent nick, but I don't really know its strengths/weaknesses or if it would fill a gap in my setup or not.

Whats the bass like? What are the filters like etc? I know its pre midi and I would only really buy it if it was gonna be good for phat analog bass sounds and phat analog synth stabs?

Experiences/opinions welcome

The Jupiter 4 is a difficult one to sum up. In real terms its a lovely sounding, relatively flexible 4 oscilator analog monosynth. It was heavily used from around 1979-1982 on pop tracks (Duran Duran 'Rio' random arpegio - Depeche Mode 'Just Can't Get Enough' lead riff) etc etc

To be honest, Ive never used one or owned one. It does sound great.....but I prefer Pro-One's and Mono-Poly's.

Heres a clip or two to get an idea

JUPITER 4 EXPERIMENT

Sorry I cant help further

I've never played with a 4 either, but I've played around on an 8 and I thought it was pretty damn nice - too expensive though.

If you still enjoy what the Alpha-Juno has over VA, think about that difference again between the Alpha-Juno and the Jupiter.

Cheers guys,

I love the Jupiter 8 alright but that's a different kettle of fish altogether.

Might be better off saving my coin for a dave smith mono evolver or a future retro 777 for the moment though.

I want something true analog, but I want midi (yes, i want it all)

how about going for a juno 60midified or 106?
sometimes they go for a reasonable price, 250-300$

The sound between the Junos and the Jupiters is quite different in my limited experience. The jupiters being much phatter IMO. I had an alpha juno 2 for a little while but it wasn't really the sound I was lookin for and it had troubles so I had to get rid of it. Also, the juno 106s seem to be all falling over (voice chips) right now so I'd be very wary of buying one.

HC you've played with a JP8? How the hell did that pass me by...you should have told me man

Probably my favourite sounding synth of all time. To me it sounds like a polyphonic System 100/700. I love that vintage Roland analog tone...

Did you play one in one of the Japanese vintage synth music shops?

Strangley enough it was in a small clothing shop! The shop assistant had a 909 and a Jupiter and he was just playing around while waiting for customers.
Last time I was in Tokyo it was just passing through unfortunately, so I didn't get time to head into the big stores.
