Layer sounds that compliment each other nicely. Say if you have two pads, one that has nice upper frequencies but unruly low frequencies, then you can EQ out the LFs and combine the patch with another pad with nice LFs and instead EQ the HFs out so they will gel together.

Same with bass, where you have a nice upper frequency bass line, but want to combine it with a sub-bass sound to underpin and strengthen it.

I also sometimes put two sounds that play the same part on either side of the panorama for stereo width.

I second what timo wrote. I basically use eq cuts to get two or three sounds to layer nicely with each other.

with the Polar, is there a way to make more than one patch play at the same time when playing live (without sequencer)

I dont know without a sequencer but in ableton live you can use midi conrollers to arm more than one midi chanel at a time creating a combinator or layerd sound effect where each note triggers one or more patches and can make the room shake. I map my remote sl buttons to the arm track buttons to get this effect.

Each of the 16 parts responds to a midi channel assignment. If you set 2 channels to respond to the same midi channel, then they will play simultaneously.
