Default cpu load and external hard drives

Would designating different files to different hard drives ( samples to HD 1 and audio tracks to an external HD for example ) take any load off of cpu thats being pushed to it's limits? I was thinking about picking up an external hard drive thinking this might keep my PC from freezing up under load.

yes if you have your daw on one drive (your main) and your samples on a 2nd drive will take some strain of your computer as you hard disk won't be working so hard.

I use a lacie 160gb external drive for my sounds and does help a lot.
