Hiya Guys and Gals,

I have just found out that with the subscription to my ISP I get 250 Meg of Webspace - amazing what you find out when you take time to read about stuff!

Anyway I can now start putting some of my tracks up for you guys to listen to: http://www.kushdee.force9.co.uk/Tracks/LetsGo.mp3

I have only got one track here at work so I'll put that on for now. It is not finished (none of my tracks are) in that the final mix is yet to be done - this is the bit that scares me!

The levels are not right but you get an idea of the track anyway.

The vocal is taken from the Accapellas Jasedee mentioned on another forum and is Lara Fabian's "I believe". I don't normally right Europop which is what I would classify this as but its was fun none the less.

Any feedback would be most welcome as I never normally put my music in the public domain, so please be as brutally honest as you can.

Thanks,

Martyn

p.s. it may take a few attempts to get the URL right - we cannot download mp3's at work so I can't test the URL myself. Please bare with me I will get it right in the end.

Uh-oh. Trouble on the lowend. Oh the porridge, the porridge. Also too heavy compression. The whole mix swallows when the kick hits (sidechain?) and it doesn't sound nice. Also the kick doesn't stand out at all. It just gets drowned and same goes for bass. The kick and bass are just one big whoooom on the background. Time for heavy EQ and probably changing the kick sound. The vocals are not-so-high-quiality. Seems like 22kHz recording. Not good. Otherwise this seems ok.

To do list:
1. Cross EQ the lowend to get rid of the porridge effect.
(optional) 2. Change the kick sound.
3. Change the vocals to better quality ones if possible.

Cheers for the feedback Juho.

All good points which I am glad to hear as it confirms what I have thought. What you hear is the track after tracking, I did this about 6 months ago and had just bought the UAD-1 and was a bit heavy handed with the LA2A not to mention the Fairchild.

The kick is part of a loop, Which I have tried to chop. The vocals are from a poor quality mp3. I changed the bass a couple of months ago to tidy up the bottom end a bit but left the track in a state of disarray so hence the reasons why I put this mix (or unmix) up.

Thing is the mix is something that I am terrified of doing in my music as I don't trust my ear - so you're comments are most welcome as they reassure me to maybe trust my ears more and give it a go. I have about 40 tracks that are in this state of unmixed muddiness

I'll go back to this track and rework the parts you suggest. Anyone else got any advice for any more?

Cheers,

Martyn

I'm really happy to see your tracks up Martyn. I'll be on the cable on Thursday so I'll be listening then.

This message is like a reminder to myself.

Better late than never.....

I like your other one alot better! But that is just a case of personal taste.....

As far as the track goes, I think it is one of those tracks that could end up making you a bit of money. Or end up on a Top Ten club mix compilation. It is something I consider, using those acapella's......make a really commercial, top ten style dance track, hopefully make millions, sell my soul to the devil, buy a beaut studio, and live in the mountains with the gorillas and make music.

I agree with the low end troubles......a bit murky, but a favorite saying of late for some people is:

"They'll fix that in mastering"

Dont know if I agree, but really, everything is there, you just need to clean up a couple things, levels etc, and your track is done.

I have the same issues as you........I can never finish a track! I keep going back, and thinking I can do it better, and then sometimes I get frustrated and just tear it all down, and start again, but by then I've lost interest.........

Again, nice one!

OK, time to rip your track appart mate. Hope you don't mind.

The track itself has some good progression specially driven by that vocal. Like the general flow of the track. The sections lead into eachother quite well.

Drums - The drums themselves flow well with a pretty cool groove, it's just the production. The high end hats are very splashy, kick and snare lack crucial "punch".

Vocals - I don't mind the vocals actually. They have a heap of processing, but still sat quite well with me. Really like some of the reversing FX, pitch shifts and the delays work well. Sometimes I felt they over powered the mix a little, but for this type of track no porblem. Cool.

Synths - The synths work well too, but again the production doesn't sit that well with me. The bass (along side the kik) has very little definition. It's hard to pick what you may have done here, but it sounds very muddy - maybe you compressed the kick hard (plus the other drums parts) with that bass all-together as one? Like I said hard to pick, but it need a bit of clarity. The other synths although a little squashed are pretty cool. I like the FX and melodies through out actually.

All up a nice track mate. Needs a bit of production work (maybe I'd tame the limiting down for the master stage too actually), but still a heap of potential!

Good to see your work up online.
