Not really since all the companies is out to make money therefor they'll make different machines for different types of things but they'll never make the "one machine you'll need" you _always_ gotta buy something more.

"To really be able to use this machine to it's 100%, you just gotta buy this and this and that and oooohh some of those!"

But as I said there's coming a patch converter for Fantom series that allows you to use AKAI, E-mu, Roland and other various formats in Fantom.

Also a sampler can be used for creating your own unique samples too. You are not restricted to just using sample CDs.

It's easy to record other samples, process them in the computer (or in the sampler itself) and transfer them back and forth from the computer to the sampler. This way you can get completely new sounds.

I have an ancient Emu sampler that I don't really use anymore, but I've been thinking about getting into sampling again and this particular soundset definitely sounds like something I could use as well. Can it be used with a software sampler?? If so, which one might be a good try? I'd prefer something fairly simple to use over something complex with lots of features.

I've done a little search myself and it seems that Kontakt and Sampletank both reads Akai format. Anyone knows which one to go for?

There is always the option of buying a simple controller keyboard and a rack-sampler. Or as the guys mentioned above, going for a software sampler. If you went for the rack-sampler option, you could probably get 2 older rack-samplers and controller for the price of the Fantom. Going the soft option though, means you will have to carry around a computer.

A lot depends on if you would like the onboard ROM sounds of something like the Fantom.

By the way, blueswan, what Emu are you running? Depending - want to sell it for cheap? Gotta love those Emu filters!
