Default A question about Stuff

I have the Nord2 and original Supernova rack. I like them both, though the Nord puts me off a little with its interface for saving programs/ sounds etc.. call me picky I know.

The Supernova is great, its been my favourite synth for years though i'd like a change and overall i'm thinking about cashing them both in for a Roland JP-8080. Unless of course I could get a JP-8080 as a swap for just one of them, which i'm not sure if I could?

Any feedback out there to assist my thoughts?

Does anyone own all three? How do you rate them in comparison?

I own a JP-8000 and a Nord Lead 2X.

Love them both alot!

How do you intend to get your hands on a JP-8080? It's been discontinued for a long time now. I guess the only way is to buy a used one...

Man, if I had an 8080 I'd swap you for sure!

I've looked into things a bit further and it seems that the Nord 2 racks are selling for around the same price as the 8000 and perhaps at a stretch the 8080.

A direct swap deal for the Nord may not be considered by 8080 owners so perhaps selling off the Nord on Ebay then picking up an 8000 or 8080 from Ebay might be more feasible?

I'd consider the Nord and Supernova swap for the 8080+ Smartcard (which are supposed to be quite difficult to get hold of) and any additional sound sets.

One thing though is that I wonder how much duplication there would be in sounds with the 8080 and my Fantom XR rack? Although one is a module and the other a VA there's bound to be some likeness.

I'm also at this moment unsure of the sonic differences between the 8000 and 8080?

And I read that the Midi connections on the 8080 are a bit odd or different from the normal In/Out/Thru and wonder if this might cause needless agrivation?

I'm more or less just thinking out loud here though would appreciate any input and advice from you guys as I confirm for myself what would be the best way to go. I'm not geting full use out of the Nord/Supernova these days and would appreciate getting hold of something which I will use on a more full on basis. And as far as synths go the JP's look and sound quite promising.

Just grab a Roland sh-201 when its released in the next few weeks.

http://www.roland.co.uk/synth_room_catdet.asp?id=sh201

Exact same engine and spec as the 8080 (bar chorus and a couple of other pissy things) and has some very nice new additional features including vsti front end, editable arps, new lfo routines and reverb. Best of all it costs pretty much the same new as an 8080 goes for 2nd hand, even cheaper if you get one from synthplanet/keyboard shop...

?356, fucking bargin for that 80xx sound.

My friend who's JP8080 I've been borowing was at the release of the SH201 and he says that it is the EXACT same sound engine. For me, if this guy says so, I'll take it as gospel

It loooks quite cool, unless I have it wrong it does seem to lack severely in patch memory though. Only 32 preset and 32 user. I do love my presets to get me started inspirationally most times with a tweak here and there. Programming sounds from scratch every time isn't so desireable. Though maybe thats just my lazy ass that thinks so.

ps - Gopal, does your friend fancy a swap deal for the 8080?

Where are you Nvisible? If you're somewhere where I know some people I'll do the swap for sure.

You have to remember with that SH201 that it works as a VSTi as well, so patch memory isn't an issue so much (unless you're heading out with the thing alone I guess).
