Default Live setup

Ok, I'm buying some new equipment for doing liveset (but also for recording too).

I have:
Indigo 2
Yamaha Rm1x sequencer.

Now, this is sufficient for me to play live, but I have the Rm1x going through the Indigo since I don't have a mixer yet. This is not the best thing, but i works. I'm getting a mixer next month (if I can find a good second hand unit).

Now, since I'm doing psychedellic trance with pumping Kick and basslines, I'll be getting a compressor too. I will not be using software since my labtop sucks and I really don't want to use software for playing live at all.

I had in mind that I would get a 2 channel compressor like the Behringer MDX2100 and send Kick and Bass from seperate outs on the Indigo to it and further to the mixer (or from the mixer to the compressor?). Should kick and bass be send from different outs or can I use the same with the same result?

Also, would I benefit from adding another compressor between the mixer and the PA (or computer if recording)? Or should I rather put it between the Rm1x and the mixer, since percussion is done from the Rm1x?

Any ideas about this?

First off, good luck with the live set!

You probably won't need the compressor from the mixer to the PA as the house should have that already.

I'd definiately grab a mixer somewhere if I was you though. Having access to your own EQs would be helpfull, plus having the outputs of your gear on different sliders will make life easy.

About the drums. Here's where a sampler would be nice. It would be better to have played around with all the compression on the drums at home in your studio then record the result to sampler for easy processing later. If you are using heaps of different drum types in your set it could become a problem.

Anyway have fun and at least it's a good excuse to buy more stuff!

The rm1x is unfortunatly not a sampler. It's mainly a sequencer and have no in-connections other than midi-in.
It has some onboard effects like chorus, reverb, flanger and so forth.

Yes, my primary investment is going to be the mixer for EQing there instead of directly on the Virus patches. The Kick/bass compressor is the next thing I'll get!

I don't really have a problem (or have had one yet) by running the drumloops live (and I can't afford a sampler right now ).

I'm not sure all the places I've played have had a compressor between their mixer and the PA, since it has most been low-budget raves and some borrowed mainstream discos...
But also I would like the second compressor for home-use too.

why not runing the kick and bass off your lap top on audio?
already prerecorded before the gig
lots of producers do that.

For live use, the behringer compressors will be fine, cos if it breaks, they are so samn cheap you can just buy a new one. And, basically, they do the job that is required.....

I have seen behringer stuff in the racks that Radiohead use for Live concerts!!!! They do have a place and a time.

Good luck!

Well mainly because my laptop sux

also I like the thing that I can actually mute for instance the kick, bass or the whole percussion part while playing live. I can do that now since I can mute any given midi-channel by pressing the appropriate button on my Rm1x.
