I think in order to answer your question, you should describe what firewire peripherals you're getting and what you're using them for...

To answer basic questions: is firewire fast? Well, faster than USB (as in 'gobs and gobs' faster). Not faster than USB 2. Firewire 800 is faster than USB 2, but not many products support 800 yet.

I use a firewire audio interface (828mkII) and external hard drives (Lacie), they all work just dandy....

You can use both. I used to have 4pin on a laptop connected to a 6 pin on the pc. Just need to get the right cable to do it.

Also you can hook the laptop to a firewire harddisk connected to the pc and network through that like a hub.
