Yeah you gotta have some kind of software if you are using it as an insert.

Access' chart on the total integration aspect only shows audio going into the VST, not coming out. I suspect you will not be able to process audio through anything but the physical ins, at least in the initial release.

Acutally on one of the brochures from access it does seem to indicate that audio can be sent back to the virus for processing, I think its like page 4 on the english 2005 pdf brochure:

http://www.access-music.de/download_brochure2.php4

Maybe I am reading the descriptiong wrong or its a feature that wont be available at first, but it does sounds promising.

u4ia, you seem to be right!

Page 4: The Virus TI is real hardware, but with the included VirusControl software and a USB connection, you can seamlessly ?port? its engine into your computer for use as a VST/AU softsynth, making this the world?s first hardware synth with sample-accurate timing. Instead of your computer?s CPU, the Virus? onboard dual DSPs handle the work, as multi-channel audio data is streamed to the host application. You can also chain other plugins before routing to any audio output. *It?s even possible to send audio back to the Virus for synth-engine processing by the envelopes, filters, or fx.*

I take it the latter is happening through the USB connection. Great!

Wow...That really adds lots of possibilities!

The effects on the virus aren't the best but it still would be really nice to be able to use them on vsts+samples so I could save on cpu usage
And if I understood correctly, I'd be able to use the SICK virus filters on my other vsts/samples!

That would really rock
