Default Air raid siren, kind of...

Hey,

trying to make a siren-typ-of-sound that should start off on low pitch and go to high pitch and stay there.
I don´t want to use portamento because I want it to trigger everytime I hit a note, if you understand...
Can I use the LFOs to control the pitch and to trigger the way I want..?

Thanks
/F

I just tried this as an exercise:
Start with your Init patch.
Transpose -2
Put in a modicum of sub osc
Detune your oscillators a bit to demusicalise the thing
Use your matrix to set modulator as Filter Envelope
Destinations 1 and 2 set to Osc 1 Pitch and Osc 2 Pitch, amount +20 each
Bung in some Osc 2 FM amount +15 for a bit of whirring as destination 3
Set your filter envelope attack to maximum (slowest pitch rise)
Hit a note, hear it whirr into action, and watch out for passing Heinkel He 111s

I tried it on my Virus Rack and it turned out to sound like a completely different sound, like a sci-fi laser firing! Where did I make mess? =)

Good stuff, H5N1
If you develop your siren patch and get a realistic result, I'd love to know about the patch. I can't recall the last time I actually heard a siren of the kind I think you mean - probably on some episode of Dad's Army - but it's been interesting to consider how my brain has stored the sonic memory. One thing that I can't quite nail is that I think the archetypal siren sound in there seems to have two or more fundamental pitches, perhaps generated by two different fan arrangements in the physical device. This would suggest detuning oscillators to a significant interval, but you'd still want to distort all the harmonics to stop your siren sounding too musical, and you'd probably want to avoid a full diatonic interval in the first place - perhaps tricky on a 12-semitone based system.

Default Super Job H5N1

Hi, I started with your advice and quickly crafted a quite convincing Air Raid Siren sound with my virus TI snow:

Start with the -init- sound:
up OSC 2 Detune to 88;
up Sub Oscilator volume to 34;
Set Transpose to -24;

Filter Envelop settings:
A: 108;
D: 0;
S: 100%;
R: 127;

Amp Envelop settings:
A: 0;
D: 127;
S: 100%;
R: 127;

Mod Matrix:
Assign 1:
source: Filter envelop;
to: Osc1 Pitch +19;
to: Osc2 Pitch +17;
to: Osc2 FM Amount +15;

Assign 2:
source: Filter envelop;
to: Filter Env attack -13;
to: Amp Env decay -29.

Cherry on the cake:
FX 2:
turn Reverb Send to Max (Eff);
Up Reverb decay to 91;

FX1:
turn Analog Boost to max;

Used some tips from the Programming analog synths handbook:
http://virus.info/api/download/dlid/...20in%20English

Hitting a F2 key with this setting sends me right back to my primary school years, I used to live very next to such a Siren device by then... Tested every first Wednesday each month... meaning that it's day off for school kids! Makes me happy... THX H5N1! Thanks to you, I'm happier today!

Sure it's realistic enough to carry out a huge hoax...

Do never use it through a 300 W amplifier. You could create panic!
