Default Am I INSANE?

Im looking into picking up a new DI for my monosynth and Bass guitar....

Now, I could just spend $50 on some shitty B******** DI or similar, but I wanted something decent. I've made too many bad purchases already, and I only want to add quality to my studio.

So.... I was looking at DW Fearns Passive DI

but this little beast is gonna cost me USD$390 (including shipping to Australia)

SO.....AM I INSANE?

Should I just buy a cheaper alternative, like Whirlwinds HOTBOX:

or Direct-JT (Which uses Jensen trannies, like the DW Fearn unit)

Hell, for the money I might be spending on a DI, I could buy an SH-101 or other Analogue synth...

Whaddya reckon????

Or you could *maybe* find a useful complete pre-amp/channel strip box for that kind of cash - maybe with a valve based gain stage if you are really lucky.

exacly what i wanted to say,
for that price you can pick up a fairly decent second hand valve based preamp which will act as a DI and give you some extra color for your mic recordings when needed.

maybe try the TL Audio stuff.

but then again if you want the best of the best, try ebaying for a used Avalon DI box. it might be the most widely used box for recording direct bass.

Thanks for the suggestions boys!

That range of TL Audio gear (Ivory series) is really nothing special. Average at best... I'd be looking into more boutique stuff, perhaps from Sebatron.

And as far as adding colour, well, I've got 10 Studer pre-amps/EQ from the 70's that are giving me all the colour I need, the next preamp I buy is gonna be a really clean one, something like the Avalon M5.

I think this might just be the GAS taking hold of me and making me sick in the head...

Someone once told me logic (or desparation ) makes you buy dull boxes with no knobs or lights on them - GAS makes you buy stuff with lots of pretty lights and knobs to tweak

Hmmm....perhaps then it is logic, cos that DW Fearn DI is very plain, bland looking box.

I tend to agree with the guys above Jase. It's a lot of money when you compare it with the stuff you could buy.

That being said though, maybe it is what you need/want.....

Mmm, the point of this post? I dunno really.
