CPU usage seems to depend on alot of things. For instance....my P4, 2.4 ghz laptop cant run any softsynth without locking up. Exactly what spec is an average synth these days? I think if you have a dedicated ausio pc...then CPU usage will be minimal.

the whole point about having hardware to calculate the sound is to NOT tax the CPU of your PC. the load of the Virus Conttrol plug-in is absolutely minimal compared to pretty much every half decent plug-in available at present.

Thanks for the answer, marc. the vst performance meter on i3 pics was looking rather high (for just using the virus), but I`m pleased to hear the virus control and USB traffic are indeed aren't hitting the system resources too hard.

hey guys.. well for all the questions. Im not going to use qoutes since there will to many. as for my specs:

2.4 ghz p4 laptop w/ 512 ddr
audigy pcmia w/ optical spdif
Running Cubase SX3

the card im using gives me 3 asio drivers to work in: creative ASIO, SB Audigy 2 ASIO and SB Audigy 2 ASIO 24/96. so whats the Virus USB AISO driver for? It shows sound levels when active, but is not routing correctly.

technomonster: so far so good! really havent dived into the forms yet. still workin on tuning in SX.

Ben: ya I noticed that to. I tweaked the asio setting and it did have a significant change. Ill give the realtime export another try.

DIGITAL SCREAMS: use the print screen button (Prt SC) and then make a new project in your Image editing software (ms paint or adobe photoshop). Then you just hot key it (ctrl+v) on the canvas. wala! I use PS CS and when you make a new project it already allocates the size of the desktop shot you saved in memory.

marc: NI Battery 2 gives me a signifant increase in cpu load. hopefully thats the reason?

BTW...ur laptop specs are the same asmine. Is it an audio laptop? Or just a regular one? I have a P4 1.8ghz desktop back home which definitely uses less CPU to run softsynths etc. My laptop locks up to 100% even if you use the damn built in calculator. This is where quality audio computers come into their own. They get shipped with minimal CPU hogging background programs.....

Its a sony vaio. Its quite a fast lappy. I usually tweak xp so there no unwanted programs or processes running in the background and optimize the GUI.

Interesting. The only thing is...in my experience...laptops are no good for applications which utilize lots of resources....they seem to choke all too easily. Perhaps its the motherboards they use.....maybe the CPU's arent configured correctly i dont know. All I do know is that theoretically my laptop should be more powerful than my lesser desktop...and this certainly isnt the case in practical terms.

Also, sometimes soundcards can be CPU hogs. The Delta 1010....being one of them....

Alas, I use my m8's Carllion Cord 3 audio pc for screwing around on.....and its extremely efficient.

the lappy I have is a desktop replacement. I do have a 1.6 desktop that sux ass. I have the delta 1010 in the desktop and use it for realtime recording. the lappy by far blows it away in efficiency and power. The only thing that sux is that the board is 512ddr max. bah.... optimize the os and your good to go... also depends on what type of cpu you have in the lappy.

Hi - first post here, so greetings to everyone!

OK - so I have the Polar being used with the following setup: G5 iMac with OS X 10.4.2 with 1.5Gb RAM using Digital Performer 4.6 with projects at 24-bit/44.1kHz. I also have a Motu 828Mk2 as the main audio interface and a Lacie Porsche 250Gb firewire hard drive. This is what's happened so far...

v1.01 - Polar set up without a problem and the AU plugin can be used on an instrument track - full control between the virus and the plugin. Open up 1 or several midi tracks and midi recording is enabled and works fine. Audio can be recorded from output 1+2 on the virus through the 828 or as Mix track via the USB cable. Only problems are CPU overhead - regularly between 40% and 60% with occasional spikes into the red at 100% - this is with a latency of 256 samples. If I bring this up to 512 samples, CPU is now at 30 - 50% with no red spikes. The CPU overheads are noted with 1 Ti plugin and 1 24/44 audio track as a backing track.

v1.02 - Still the same CPU overhead, but now, while playing the song, if I change a patch while DP is playing, DP crashes every time. Now can hardly do anything without DP crashing on me.

Despite these niggles, the Polar sounds amazing - definitely in on a new level over the Virus KC. BTW - I have used several normal VI plugins and up to 20 audio tracks at the same sample rate in DP and never get a CPU overhead of more than 50%. Similarly my Nord G2 never gives me any problems with this either. In fact DP has been the most stable DAW I've used - this is the first time I've experienced so many crashes.

Any other Mac/DP users out there that can help?
