The Fantom XR is probably a great choice.
I own an XV-3080 sound module. The sounds are delicious and the unit is a pleasure to use. For a synth - I have it on good authority (and sound demos) that the Alesis Andromeda A6 is a beasty synth. This is analog though, not VA. On the higher end of the price range but it can create some really original sounds and sounds like real fun to program. No first-hand experience on this one though, I'm afraid.
