Default Dirty low freeform lead - how to?

As heard here in Alek Szahala - Iron Squid:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=fqptL6B8-v8

At around 3:50 into the tune..

That low lead is so so filthy! Ive played about with my Virus C a bit but have yet to achieve anything quite like that.. Saw waves, lots of distortion, Phaser..

I know the virus must be able to produce something approaching this?

isn't it just detuned unisoned saw waves with portamento and a band pass filter being modulated ?

Created a sound like this on the Z1/Moss, and...

... you've nailed it. Nothing complicated.

One other thing that many of the Korg virtual analogues can do is waveform modulation. A bit like PWM wavetabling on the TI. Shifting the phase of a wavetable against a copy of another. It makes the overall sound rock gently from one octave to another. This creates really thick sounds without any detuning. Of course you can still go ahead and detune the oscillators over the top of this, to make it even thicker. Then add 2-voice unison, and you've got yourself one very fat sound.

The "breathing" effect over the top is also similar to another Korg insert effect (on their workstations) called '2-voice Resonator'. You can make some really awesome, evil Darth Vader metallic, resonant breathing type effects, that still literally scare the pants off me every time I hear it.

More info on waveform modulation (simulated 'PWM' on non-pulse waveform oscillators):

http://www.infekted.org/virus/showthread.php?t=24409

An audio example from that thread:

[2 x detuned saw-oscillators with/without PW]

...Which shows the difference between: a) two x detuned saw oscillators with waveform modulation, and then b) without the waveform modulation.

Recorded dry, both in mono, and no unison used.

The example was created on a Korg Trinity using the Moss (Korg Z1) expansion card. Add distortion, EQ, filtering, and the 2-tone resonator effect and you'd probably be good to go.

From the Korg Trinity manual, regarding the 2-voice rez':-

Generic flanging/phasering and multi-stage bandpass filtering should get you started, though.
