Use the LAME encoder, and tweak the encoding settings to get the best/optimal result with using your particular audio. Use a quality setting of 0 (zero), it'll take longer to encode but it's a much better algorithm. The end file size wont be any different.

I use the LAME codec but with the RazorLame GUI front-end (makes it much easier to tweak).

You'll need to point RazorLame to the "LAME.exe" file once everything's installed (you can do this by going to the options in RazorLame and browsing for the Lame.exe file).
