Put simply
speaker cables have 2 cores running side by side. Instrument/guitar cables have the inner core running inside the outer core what acts as a shield. If you want to take it further use balanced cables what have a hot and cold as well as a shield, cuts out unwanted noise and hum you can pick up from running past lots of power points etc.
Fot long cable runs you should use balanced, for short runs Instrument (not speaker) jack to jacks are fine.
It would be worse though if you used the instrument/guitar cable as a speaker cable.
