I can honestly say that the Sound On Sound Synth Secrets series is worth it's weight in gold. Problem is, they don't really cover much in the way of lead sounds, pads, etc.. It's more aimed at emulating real instruments and sounds. It's unfortunate that there is really no "definitive" guide on synthesis. I really do think that is a void that is waiting for someone to fill. Every book always seems to have something missing. I really do think that the "definitive" guide would have to be a living document, like a wiki. Anyway, here's a link to the series:
