My solution to this issue is feeding Korg hardware synth arpeggiator generated midi data into Virus. Korg arpeggiator is well designed, easy to programm and I haven't experienced sync/trigger timing issues with it. There used to be also quite good vst arpeggiator - ARPocalypse and there is Sonicbytes ERA vst arpeggiator/step sequencer, which was too complex to me to understand, and there is synarp/matrix VST arpeggiator, which I couldn't get working on Ableton in first 5-10 minutes so I gave up. Actually from what I have tried only two step programmable arpeggiators work well for me - Korg TR series and Steinberg Hypersonic built in one.
This is what I do. The ESX-1 and EMX-1's control ribbons work really well for this (provided you want single note patterns rather than ARP'd broken chords).
