i use sonar 4 PE on my laptop but my primary DAW is a mac and i have Logic Pro running on it. Logic is quite a handful until you get used to it, i personally felt that Sonar was the easiest for me to pick up and start recording with right away though.
i tried a bunch of demos including Cubase. i couldnt make a single sound out of it after messing with it for 10 minutes so i uninstalled and never looked back. thats just me though.
i've never messed with Digital Performer but it looks pretty darn cool.
i occassionally use Garageband 3 as well just for testing ideas and such.
