I wouldnt call the Fusion FM a clone any more than one VA can be considered to be a clone of any other VA.

Its a synthesis approach - also one that happens to be cheap to compute.

The real challenge IMHO is not creating anything fancy in tersm of new takes on FM synthesis beyond what the fusion has done - but in someone finding a way to make the whole sound design design *way* more user friendly.

Sound crafting in FM is allmost like writing code in assembler - there desparately needs to be a higher level approach to dealing with it - maybe one that fit in more with the more familar world of VA programming...

Its this issue that is to my mind mostly responsible for the lack of FM synths - too many people find it complete sod to work with. While the fusion has a nice UI, because it offers more choice and finer control - that actually FM programming become even harder unless you have a load of good patches to reverse engineer.
