I'd say the best drum machines are the ones that have pads to trigger the sounds - growing out of a drum machine happens quite quickly, so having one that can trigger other instruments via midi is a must.
As far as the Machinedrum goes, I almost consider that thing a synth more than a drum-box. Where's Uden to explain more about the Machinedrum when you need him?
