What kind of music are you going to be making? Mainly dance/electronica based stuff??

The music you are making should narrow down what kind of device/software you should be looking for in terms of creating drum loops etc

Im sure there are lots of things out there similar to the electribe....but I guess that the electribes are quite low in price at the moment, so it seems like too good a deal to pass up. I was about to get the electribe EA-1...as it was US$199......but then my logic kicked in and I asked myself, "Why are you buying this Korg Electribe when you have a Virus C?". Seemed like a dumb thing for me to do.

Im sure there are some users here that have the ER-1......they will tell you how they sound. Also try "Harmony-Central" for reviews....and ZZ-Sounds. I sometimes find their user reviews section handy.
