Getting a Sound to be as analog like as it can be ??
 

Hello fellow virusites. I just have a fairly straight forward and probably silly question. Have any of you found a formula or method to creating patches that have a more analog sensibility? I realize that the Virus TI is a digital synth and has constraints that apply to being so, but have hope that there is some way to get the warmth and fullness that is inherent to analog equipment. I have a Future Retro Revolution, and can definitely hear a quality it possesses that I would like to try and translate to programming patches on my Virus. I have a Virus TI 2 keyboard, and would greatly appreciate any advice or resource suggestions that could allow me to take the direction I would like to regarding my programming techniques. Use less FX. Try uzing your ringmod instead of distortion.

I find that the key to getting analog sounds is to squeeze the right overtones out of patches... Thats why using ringmodulation instead of the more obvious route of distortion can generate more analog-sounding patches. Its also more unpredictable!

Distortion and saturation always have their place for making things sound more analog though, because when you have a sound that has been filtered out and then you saturate/distort it, you generate more overtones that were not there initially, and thats why our ears get pleased with this sense of `analog` that it has. But analog sounds are never tooo bright as well, so always do filter them!

Distortion also compresses the sound, but using a compressor like Vintage Warmer or tape saturation plugins can add even further warmth to the sound.
