August Sound On Sound - Virus Article on Programming

Guys might want to check this issue out. I just received my copy in the mail yesterday and it's got some good info.

How about a few little quotes or something. It's difficult to buy any music mags over here (specially in English).

Here's one with the Arp and if you know it then don't bust my balls

"The arpeggiator also hides a secret, which is that notes in each pattern include velocity information. So patching velocity to filter cutoff, Wave Sel, or some other timbral parameter can produce some wonderfully dynamic rhythmic effects."

I went back to alot my arpeggiated patches and did this. It definitely added some more character. I'll try to post more later, but this liilte exercise had me going for a few hours.

Thanks Monads.

Yeah I did know about that little function. I'll find a copy somewhere and take a read.

hollowcell, if your talking about sound on sound the magazine...

I should point out that if you've read the tutorial manual by HS and sat through the manual (mine are both crazy highlighted inside), then you don't need this article. It's a decent read for newcomers but if you plough through the HS tutorial you'll just learn far more.

Heck, it could of at least pointed out the PhaseInit of Osc3 when at 1, 32, 64, 96, 127 :D

Got the paper mag, and haven't had chance to read through it yet, but did it suggest using an FM Amount of 42 or 43? I've found usually those values make sounds with FM work well, harmonically, with the original sound. :)

I read it. It wasnt very good imo.

"For analogue simulations you'll often get the best and fattest sound by leaving saturation turned off."

8O Uhm does he even know how an analog filter behaves?

isnt saturation meant to emulate filter overdrive in analog synths?

IMHO, the Virus' Saturation function sounds terrible. It deteriorates/annihilates the sound instead of enhancing it, even when used subtley on what would normally be prime 'saturation' types of sounds (ie. rich pads, leads etc.).

For warmth, I'd choose the PSP Vintage Warmer over the Virus' own Saturation any day. Even PSP VW sounds drop dead gorgeous when pushed really hard, which is far much more than can be said regards the saturation on the Virus. I nearly always leave it off. It tends to sound better.

I posted a topic on the SOS forums not all that long ago, too.
