Sh 101

Im trying to decide whether or not to buy one, does anyone have an opinon, I would use for electro and DnB.

If its cheap enough then I say go for it. I had my hands on a few here (for resale purposes) and they are really cool sounding boxes.

For electro they fit, and I would say they'd fit the more girly DnB too - the more heavier stuff would take a bit of re-sampling.

Personally I'd go for a Juno 60 over an SH101

Check out the 'AMAZING PAD' sound i recently programmed....only a Juno can do that....

any thoughts on the 106 guys?

ShortBus 26.10.2009 11:46 PM

The guy sold the sh101, I wasnt ready to commit. The 106 is a great poly synth but it only has 1 osc and relys on the built in chorus to fatten it up. Still, better get ahold of one while they are still affordable.

I have a SH-101 and really like them. I think the current prices are very fair for what they are.

If I had to choose only one hardware synth, I'd go for a Virus TI (obviously! ;)). If I could choose one modern and one vintage synth, it'd be a TI and a 101. The 101 is very limited compared to a Virus, but what it does, it does very well. There's a good 'weight' to the sound and it sounds very solid in isolation, without having to add external effects, compression, etc.

I'd also recommend them to anyone wanting to start learning synthesis, the simple signal path and slider/knob for every parameter makes it very easy to get your head round. The aesthetics of the hardware itself are beautiful too. I don't know why; looking at any one part in isolation it looks clunky and even cheap-looking, but together, it all works as a whole and is probably my favourite looking synth of all time, particularly in the (most common) grey colour.
