Sun Studio Pics - Memphis, TN

Hey fellas, I am halfway across the US on my road trip. One of my stops was in Memphis Tennessee. I decided while I was there, I should check out the famous Sun Studio where legends like Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis etc. recorded many of their hits. It was a very cool place. Here are some pics. The mixer was the one used to record U2 Rattle and Hum record and the shot of the drums were the ones Larry Mullin used on that album. The mic is located in the spot where Elvis would sing. Apparently he liked to face away from the control room as he got nervous looking at the engineers. By the way, I have been in Austin, TX for the past few weeks - this place is seriously fun and from what I hear, has a great music scene as well. Hope you like the pics. Cheers!

Awesome!

Good show, Doc!

My cousin used to live in Austin (on the corner of Garden and Waller right off I-35W) and I would go out to Manuel's with him for a bite to eat when I was in town.

It is a great town to hang out in and I bet living there is cool too.

He did so for over twenty years.

The University, booming high-tech industry, and government infrastructure have produced an interesting and culturally diverse micropolis.

Have a safe trip, Doc!

Well, you are travelling in a sense, just taking a long damn time to come back home. You are the ultimate traveller I guess.

So no need to be jealous...

Great pics by the way Doc. Do people still record there, or is it just a museum???

Agreed, HC I would love to be scoping out Japan like you are at the moment! And of course, there is where you are Jasedee. . . so I think we are all feeling a little jealousy at the moment :)

Yeah, believe it or not they do. I was talking to one of the engineers and he was saying they are seriously looking at Nuendo. That surprised me as I figured they would be a full on Pro Tools shop! Also, when I first walked into the actual recording portion of the studio I was like "this can't be it". No high end acoustic foam, no bass traps or diffusors etc. I was thinking how the hell can you get a good sound in here? and then I realized this is exactly the type of setup that gave them that legendary sound (which incidentally also gave them those multi platinum records)

Good shit! No foam = natural verb and echo. Love that sound. ANyways, thanks for sharing. Have fun on the rest of your trip.

Stay somewhere for more than a year and a half and it stops being the excitement of travelling. Trust me. I'm at a point where I'd love to take another treck somewhere, although my 9 month old kid isn't.

I really do envy you guys that are out and about. Do it while you can, seriously. Human men aren't meant to be trapped. :D

Hi Alex, this is like the third time I have heard someone mention Manuel's for good mexican food. I am just going to have to check it out. I got a chance tonight to visit a local blues/jazz pub on 5th street. The place had a very cool/dark atmosphere. The music was good and the place seemed pretty well filled up. Not bad for a Monday night!! :)
