i has a vulture ^_^

Thermionic Culture Vulture arrived a couple days ago :>
It's awesome. The valves glow. The sound is great. Sounds particularly good on the Virus!

My custom-built rack has arrived as well, my bandmates and I will be decorating it this weekend...

DAW just arrived, but it lacks several important things - a power cable (i found one in my box of scavenged computer parts though), the DVI monitor switcher i asked for, and most importantly, Cubase! I can't write anything without a sequencer, so for now it's just a very fancy rackmounted computer. Waiting to hear when the rest of the stuff will be shipped out..

what exactly does the Culture Vulture do to the sound of the virus

annikk.exe 20.02.2009 08:28 AM

Well, it's a distortion unit.. so it makes it sound squelchy and awesome ! Or alternatively you can just use it to gently warm the sound. It's an all-analog unit so it's nice for injecting a bit of analog warmth into very digital sounding virus patches..

I mostly bought it for the squelchiness though. :>

ok... as promised, clicky [1.4meg, 192KBPS mp3]

This is me doing what I hope to god anyone buying one of these units would do immedietely, which is to see what it sounds like turned up to the max :P
So yeah. This is some random drum set I found in Cubase and the "init" patch of the virus, only even simpler than that - only 1 oscillator. With Vulture over the whole lot (after the first 10sec).

Bear in mind this is it maxed out, without any filters or anything, so it's harsh and very aggressive. I think with some filter/EQ and maybe a bit of modesty on the settings I'm going to be able to make some pretty awesome sounds with this thing... :>

I have several Thermionic units in the studio, Vulture, Phoenix and Earlybird.

The Vulture is generally meant for much subtler tones, like Valve warming of a TI! That's what I use mine for.
Of course you can also go Trent Reznor (ripped speaker style) on a sound, which you have! Sounds great.

If I was buying now not 4 years ago, I would have gone for the Fat Bustard which covers different ground to my units, but suits my use more.

I r jealous!!
What's the phoenix like? :>

Thanks for listening to my crappy little sample anyway, even though you already have a vulture :>

Don't be jealous you have the best one. :D

The Phoenix doesn't get used much anymore, it's too washy for my taste.
You can listen to The Prodigys last album for examples of what it sounds like, Thermionic is all over that (Vulture and Phoenix).

I know a lot of people really like that style of compression, I prefer something much more transparent at the moment. I used Powercore MD3 before I got the Phoenix and have gone back to it now.
