ProTools 8 and Virus

Looks like ProTools 8 is finally a reality, the upgraded midi functionality appeals to me. But now Virus control is working in Tools 7.4 at last I'm terrified of upgrading. Anyone tried it yet?

I have had some problems with the interface. It seems to work when it initially pops up. But, If you close the interface and bring it back up, then the mouse pointer is offset and it makes it very difficult to select anything. Meaning, I will try and select a preset from the browser. Say the first preset... I try and click on the first preset, where the mouse pointer is hovering over, and it selects the 7th preset. The is reproducible. I will have to open a ticket with Access.

I am running the latest 2.75.

Yeah that's the kinds of thing that could send me to bed for a week weeping uncontrollably. The new MIDI features in Tools 8 are just so promising though, what a predicament....

Oh, and happy new years eve everyone, I wish you all a peaceful and happy 2009!! With lots of nookie!

Personally, I'm going to wait a little while to upgrade to PT8, as I don't think the dust has fully settled yet.

I've learned the hard way by upgrading as soon as a major version is released (not just in Protools either) and then chaos ensued, so I had to roll back to my prior version.

Your mileage may vary.

technog0d 07.01.2009 03:34 PM

I would say it depends on your needs... I love my Virus Ti and i think it is one of the best all around Synths and I am a synth whore. But, Protools 8 is very nice and so far has been very stable for me. If you could use the features of Protools 8 then I would say go for it.

It works fine on my Macbook Pro... It's my Mac pro with my video card that does not seem to work. Maybe it's limited to my video card. It a nvidia Gforce 8400gs. It works the first time i open the plugin, but then it does not work after i close the plugin window and then re-open and try to select a different patch in the browser. The pointer is on the top of the browse window and when i select something it selects a patch maybe 5 patches down from the mouse pointer.

i'm on the same OS and a radeon HD2600. i doubt that it makes a difference. in fact, if it would, it would be beyond the scope of VC. did you contact access support?

best, marc

technog0d 09.01.2009 01:34 AM

Marc,
Thanks for all of your help. I initially wasn't really asking for help on this forum. Just making an observation that i know may only be true on my machine. I will definitely call tech support if i cannot troubleshoot it. I would like to try and swap out my video card first and see what happens. Again, I really appreciate your trying to help me out. Access is a great company with great products.

Regards,

Mike

So does that mean it does work haha!? Maybe I'll throw caution to the wind and give it a go, what's the worst thing that can happen............................

sysex 15.01.2009 05:41 PM

I've experienced the same issues with the VCC plugin in PTLE 8.

My setup is as follows.
Macbook Pro 2.16 c2d | 4gigs RAM | 320gig 7200rpm drive | 128mg ATI PCIe
Mbox Pro 2 Firewire
Virus TI Keyboard 2.7.5

The issue is the same as the original poster. I can load up the plugin, and click around and it's fine, however after closing and reopening the plugin, the mouse pointer is offset and I can only fix this if I remove the plugin and then re-insert it.

This problem also occurs in the template's I've made that already include the VCC on an instrument channel.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the TI Software.

sysex 19.01.2009 11:13 PM

Update: 01-19-09

Reformatted my Macbook Pro.
Clean install of Leopard
Downloaded and installed Combo Update 10.5.5
Installed PTLE 8
Installed Virus Control and Update to 3.0
Nothing else has been installed as of yet as I did not want any potential conflicts to occur with other apps.

Same issue is still prevalent. Upon initiating the VCC as an insert, all controls appear to work fine. After closing the plugin and re-opening it, the mouse cursor is still offset. ie: clicking "Part 1" will select "Part 5".

Only by removing the VCC insert and re-instantiating it, does the mouse control function normally.

I've confirmed the issue is occurring with both VCC RTAS plugins 2.7.5 and 3.0

My audio units work great in Ableton Live and Logic Pro.

Hell Yeh 20.01.2009 05:13 AM

The issue described by Sysex does not occur in Pro Tools M-Powered 8.0 on my PC. VC seems just as stable as it was in 2.5/2.7 in OS 3.0

sysex 20.01.2009 03:46 PM

I have confirmed the PC Version of PTLE 8 with VCC does in fact work on my Dell Latitude d620 | 1.6 c2d | 1.5gigs RAM | IntelGMA
In fact they both work better than my more powerful macbook pro.

So far I've only seen this post in regards to the RTAS plug in PTLE 8 on Mac, so I'm guessing its a system/hardware issue maybe?

In either case, I don't *have* to use the VCC to lay down parts, but it sure would be nice to figure out why the mouse cursor offsets the way it does when the plug in is re-opened. (doesn't happen with any other 3rd party plugins I've installed.) I suppose the one saving grace is that I can have the VCC instantiated and not even have to look at it or open for it to remember all the parts I've created or assigned when I save the Pro Tools Session. (Love that feature fyi)

Hell Yeh 20.01.2009 05:10 PM

Sysex,

Does/did the cursor offset issue happen at all in Pro Tools 7.4/7.4.2 or did it only start happening with Pro Tools 8.0?

sysex 20.01.2009 05:53 PM

I didn't have a chance to test 7.4. with the VCC plugin, however I can boot from an external Clone of my disk and test it out there.

technog0d 21.01.2009 01:34 AM

It seems to have started in Protools 8. I changed my card to the 2600 standard mac card and still got the same issues. Oh yeah, and i upgraded to 3.00. Just an FYI the AU version works great in Logic 8.02.

marc 22.01.2009 11:29 AM

it seems that there is a bug in protools 8 which causes the mouse pointer to have an offset. some of you have reported the problem here, some of you seem fine. i don't know the insides of the problem but digidesign has confirmed it and announced an protools update:

sysex 22.01.2009 03:33 PM

thank you marc!

felt like i was taking crazy pills for a moment!

technog0d 22.01.2009 06:52 PM

Thanks for pointing that out Marc... Much appreciated!!!

sysex 25.02.2009 04:07 PM

Digi just released the PT8 cs2 update which addresses the GUI Offset mouse cursor, for those of you on this board that haven't seen it yet.

Can use my VCC in PT8 now. joy!
