After 10 years with Cakewalk

I've moved to Ableton Live. Got a good deal on a V.6 and some Power Book and a CSi training vid. Plus I kept the Behringer BCR2000 controller which works fine with Live. Might still use Sonar to record and trim up audio loops, but the non-linear arranging possibilities in AL are pretty amazing.

nice move OVM!

Did I hear you say Powerbook?

Congrats mate! I'd love to check out Live at some point, but am far too busy working. Here are some pics from beautiful Mornington Peninsula, in VIC:

Ah.. Err, Powerbook. Umm, I meant to say a book called Ableton Live 6 Power.

You know I'm waiting for you to croak doing some mad dangerous film shoot, Jase. Inheriting is about the only way I'm ever gonna get me a Mac, unfortunately. Where are you working just now, btw?

This software is unlike anything I've ever used before. I'll post some chunes next week.

Edit: Beautiful pics! Where's VIC? Victoria, Aussie? You take them with that new camera of yours?

AlexHall74 18.01.2008 11:30 AM

My God Jase! I'm downloading all thos pictures to use as desktop wallpaper! Jesus, that place is beautiful!

jasedee 18.01.2008 09:09 PM

Matsa: Yeah, Victoria, Australia, on Port Philip Bay near the Mornington Peninsula. I was very surprised at how gorgeous it was down there. The weather was nice to us for a few days and we had a chance to go swimming and check out the Harold Holt memorial. He was one of our PM's in the 60's that went for a dip and never came back... odd.

Alex: Let me know if you want hi-res... I'll email them to ya!

I'm getting better at using the new camera, and there is a little photoshop magic happening there

AlexHall74 18.01.2008 10:41 PM

Jase,

I would love high-res images if you have them available. I'll PM you an email addy to send to, THANKS!!!

:)

Surpised? Another Sydney-sider who thinks they live in the centre of the universe :) Southern Victoria is beautiful, just mighty cold for much of the year ...

Cheers,
B

Cold? Sounds like a good opportunity to open a tanning salon! Is this a viable business down there, LivePsy? Or is the population density too sparse to allow profit?

Its not Scandanavian cold, just not quite like those pictures for most of the year. I'm sure you snow dwellers would think winter was warm.

Unfortunately tanning studios are not that successful because some jackass scientists fixed the hole in the ozone. So you can now go out and get a tan for free. And selling ice creams at the beach didn't work out too well either because I ate most of the profits...

Bastard scientists and dessert pimps. How in the hell are we expected to have any good, clean fun with the likes of them around for crying out loud!!!

I live in Northern Florida, U.S.A. and we are now in our "winter." It's actually the nicest time of year here. Highs of 78 or so, lows at night down to 28 or so (Fahrenehit for both of course.). We have no beaches here as we are pretty much surrounded by national forest, but the beach is about 2.5 hours drive. Far enough to be safe during a hurricane...

Must try out Ableton Live myself. I've been using Tracktion 2 for a few years and it sucks ass at MIDI controller implementation, unless of course you want to shell out for a Mackie Control, but I just can't pay that much for one.

Old Vantaa Man 19.01.2008 06:41 AM

It's not cold here in Scandinavia at all. Just rain, rain and more of it - thanks to climate change. There no snow in Siberia this year. Imagine that!

But back to the Mackie, Alex. The whole reason I dropped Sonar was that it wouldn't work with the Behringer BCR controller that I bought. At first I thought it was the Behringer and was about to send it back. After loads of research on the web I saw that blokes were using it extensively with Ableton. So I checked out the Live demo (fully functional app for 30 days) and it worked a treat. Bloody hell, even Daft Punk have TWO of them at the front of their "Pyramid" console thing:

You can run the BCR in Mackie emulation mode, scrub wheel the lot. It's also quite popular with Traktion users too, Al.

AlexHall74 19.01.2008 12:18 PM

Hmmmmm...must read more. The last time I tried to setup a MIDI controller in T2 it was a pain in the arse. But if the BCR has a Mackie Emulation mode that might help things a bit as the Mackie Controller is plaug'n'play with Tracktion. Will check that out, thanks for the tip Herr Vantaa. At this point I'm more interested in Ableton than Tracktion though, I need a change, and Ableton can be used as a DJ app, Tracktion can't!

;)

Old Vantaa Man 19.01.2008 02:08 PM

It doesn't officially have a Mackie MC mode, but some guys have written a sysex that is.

AlexHall74 19.01.2008 06:06 PM

Do you know whwere this sysex is available? Is it freeware?

Old Vantaa Man 20.01.2008 11:03 AM

Yeah, it's freeware. There are too many links to paste here mate. Do a search for BCR2000 Mackie emulation Traktion.

AlexHall74 20.01.2008 03:46 PM

Got it. Thanks OVM!
