Glad to get out of the village...

Staying in the village and seeing this ceremony was indeed an amzing experience, but it was testing at the same time. We were supposed to leave after 5 nights, but due to the weather, our plane wasnt able to pick us up. What made it worse was the idea of the hotel that awaited us back in the town...

Hehehe....You replied too quick Doc, I hadnt finished posting the rest of the pics yet!

I do really love my job, especially on trips like this, but it is not always this exciting.

That scar initiation process looks incredibly painful.

Do all the men in the community have to go through that process?

ledge 25.01.2007 12:08 AM

You lucky, lucky bastard!

What was it like during the ceremony?

Old Vantaa Man 25.01.2007 09:15 AM

Far fekkin out, Jase. What a trip.

SEBASTIAN. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME ON YOURSELF, ÅSA OR NOVA.

3o3 25.01.2007 09:23 PM

matsa: Hoho! I can't really say anything about myself not going thru an "ceremony" like that.. But Nova and Åsa is safe

3o3 25.01.2007 09:24 PM

jase: thanks for the pics!

The ceremony is slowly dying out. The village we stayed in is one of the last to keep up the tradition, and most of the men there have been initiated.

The ceremony is about removing the blood of the mother, which is said to be contaminated, and thus about becoming a man, and being allowed into the sacred spirit house

It was really quite intense. We were up at 6:00am and didnt stop running around for hours. By the end the cameraman and I were exhausted. I thought I would be more disturbed by the whole event, but I wasnt. It was crazy though....

No probs Seb! Glad you liked them...

jasedee 26.01.2007 03:07 AM

I'll be putting some more pics up as soon as I get home... We have filmed an initiation ceremony which involves young men swallowing canes, and we are currently trying to find a woman that breast feeds piglets.

Onkel Dunkel 26.01.2007 08:27 AM

Wow, cool pics. I wish it was me...

Tomer=Trance 26.01.2007 10:04 AM

Its amazing to see that tribal cultures still exist and their lifestyle is completly preserved.

Thank you for the censorship on the pics btw. :)

That's gratitude for ya! I'm guessing they don't do Mother's Day, then?

jasedee 26.01.2007 11:16 PM

Glad you all liked the pictures!

OVM: Yeah, the women here are treated rather shabilly. They do most of the work, whilst the men of the village sit around chewing Betel nut, smoking cigarettes, and tending to their vegetable gardens...

Hollowcell 06.02.2007 04:36 AM

Really great pics!!! I just showed a work friend here and we agreed that you have a fucking great job!!!

Timo 09.02.2007 11:11 PM

Not arf. Bloody awesome pics Jase! Looked like an amazing experience all round.
