Football thread

Anyone follow the footy on here? Shall we have a footy thread?

I'm a Manchester City supporter. Have been since 1969. Dad liked United better and 1st game I ever went to was in 68 Utd v Arsenal. My cousin who was Blue through and through was outraged and then took me to every City match until about 1974 when I started going with my mates from School. We used to have one of the best teams in the world back then (pull up a chair children), but things started going tits up after we lost the FA Cup final to Spurs in 81. Anyway. Here are a few of the great City players from BITD. I'll just post links:

Colin Bell at Wembley. Think this is the 69 Cup final. Defo at Wembley. Check the fence: http://www.sporting-heroes.net/files...00307_EL_R.jpg

Neil Young scored the winning goals for us on the day we won the Championship in 68, the day we won the Cup 69 AND when we won the European Cup Winners Cup 70. I met him in 2001 and he's a fucking legend:
http://cards.littleoak.com.au/196970...neil_young.jpg

Mike Summerbee also after we won the 69 Cup. I met Mike and George Best once at a Stockport County game. The let me sit right between me and scoffed all me salt and vinegar crisps. One of the days of my life that, brothers. Here with our greatest ever manager, the late Joe Mercer:
http://www.2sgfm.co.uk/bigp/ghaz/Deb...-and-Joe-M.jpg

Mick Doyle. Hard as fuck midfield defender who HATED United. My dad hated him too! His dad was a copper and once gave my old feller a parking ticket. Haha!
http://cards.littleoak.com.au/197475...mick_doyle.jpg

Tommy Booth partnered Mick at the back. Hero.
http://www.sporting-heroes.net/files...97903_GH_L.jpg

Tony Book was our captain. he came to City in his 30's WITH NO LEAGUE EXPERIENCE and then lead us to all the great times. See. There's hope for ya in ya 30's lads:
http://www.uit.no/mancity/pictures/bookawards.gif

Here's the whole team at Maine Road, Moss Side, Manchester:

There were some other great teams around back then from the NORTH; Liverpool and their legendary manager Bill Shankly (read all this site. He was the greatest of them all) http://www.shankly.com/index.htm
Leeds United had one of the best and most fearsome teams I've ever seen. But I'll let Drammy do that one. Or are you, like Geoff Boycott, a Yorkshire red mate?

OK. Back to the future. I think United have a good shout at the Prem this season. Fergie seems more focused on it this year, and that's good. Chelsea are getting on everyone's tits now and it's time to put Europe into perspective. Ie, a bunch of cheating, diving wankers with long hair. City could make top 6 or bottom 6. That's us. Hope Wigan do well again and would like to see Leeds back in their proper place in the Prem. Hope Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea get relegated.

Well that's the season. We could have two footy threads if anyone's into it. Weekly updates and one for My Team. I suppose this is that one. Come on lads. No reason it has to be football either. US footy, Aussie rules, whatever.

My interest in football is restricted on HatTrick (http://www.hattrick.org). Actually is a game night today. Go FC B?ren-hermesetas, GO!

Drammy 09.09.2006 11:19 PM

Nice thread Matsa,

I'm actually a Red Devil - I grew up in a village outside Manchester and all my mates were ManU fans so I followed suit. Since then I have lived in Leeds and went to Uni in Liverpool.

I always wear my ManUtd shirt with pride no-matter where I am - even in Leeds or Liverpool where you can often get spat at, although not as much as a City fan

But contrary to most United fans I have a soft spot for Leeds and Man City - hate Liverpool though!

I really hope United do it this year - I feel that Chelsea might slef destruct. I think their inability to conduct themselves like the big club they aspire to be will be their downfall this season...

As for Hattrick I gave up - too much day-trading - I didn't have time to compete!

AlexHall74 10.09.2006 02:55 AM

Karl Heinz Rummenigge still RULES!!!

The World Cup in 1974 was in Germany.

I was born in Frankfurt a.M. in 1974.

There will be no Fussball conversations about the year 1974 without proper praise for Germany OR Karl Heinz Rummenigge.

City lost 1-0 to Reading last night. I watched it on the web via some REAL feed from Serbia (you couldn't make it up!) We've got Nicky Weaver back in goal after a few years abscence, and we'd've lost more heavily had it not been for him. If last night's performance was anything to go by, we could be in a relegation battle this season. Disorganised defence, uncreative midfield, no strength up front. Very disappointed with that. Stuart Pearce (manager) reckons it was our best performance of the season so far. Jesus.

matsa 13.09.2006 07:12 PM

I don't believe this!

Indeed. Arsenal supporter checking in, only because when I got to the UK I was initialy living near Finsbury Park and the guys I was living with were all Arsenal fans.

I went from not giving a hit about football to fairly obsessed with it over the course of the two years I was in the UK, only got to go to Highbury once though as it is a pain in the fucking arse to organise if you don't have season tickets.

matsa 08.10.2006 08:13 PM

Hello Danny. Welcome to OT.

matsa 11.10.2006 07:15 PM

Has to be the most bollocks England game I have see in... mmmm... When was the World Cup? McClaren =

matsa 02.12.2006 05:19 PM

Ronaldo is a diving wanker.

Such a gifted player. Why does he do it?

theMusicMan 02.12.2006 11:29 PM

I bet you clearly remember Dennis Law's back-heel type goal against Man U which (if I remember correctly) put Man U in the then second division?

matsa 03.12.2006 12:56 AM

Mate, I do indeed. He's really the only guy who is a hero at both clubs.

Edit: Didn't put them down. It was already done bya few err.. dunno..hours, maybe. But they were already down though. It's all well-documented in Drammy (the red bastard)'s scrapbook.

Yup, not bloody bad at all. Still a lot of games to go but not bad for first run in the Premier. Other two promoted teams are doing shite compared. We might even qualify a champions league place ;)

Drammy 04.12.2006 07:25 AM

Just seen all the posts on this thread! Looking forward to Saturday at 12.45!

We'll probably be out of the Champion's League by then as well :x

matsa 04.12.2006 09:20 AM

Have you seen the new training facility United have installed for their Portuguese stars?

That's amazing.

Don't underestimate City mate! We murdered Villa last week and we're starting to look much better, finally.

You know the form book and City though. We'll probably lose tonight at home to Watford then beat yous at the swamp. Or not..

UP THE BLUES!

matsa 04.12.2006 09:36 AM

Reading have got a good team together and getting some fine results.

Haven't seen them play yet though. Haven't got SKY here. I watch most City games ppv on the net. Missed Reading v City.

Drammy 04.12.2006 12:33 PM

I never underestimate City! They often screw us over...

I'm probably one of the only ManU fans who has a soft spot for Man City and Leeds!

I used to work security at both of their grounds...

Always thought you'd come good - Pearce is fantastic manager in my opinion. You can't beat straight talkers (just like Sir Alex) - I can't stand pricks like Wenger!

matsa 04.12.2006 01:51 PM

Worked security at City and United? Bloody hell! You must have some stories!

On this season's form United ought to do us, mate. I'm going over to a mate's here to watch it on his big tv. NOTHING makes me feel more sick than derby day! You got a ticket for it then Drammy?

Pearce had a great start then it went tits up after WHU knocked us out of the cup. Away form has been dismal on the whole this season. Did you see the 4-0 at Wigan? I was very worried after that. But we've improved much since then. Squad is too small though and we don't seem to have any money to buy back Wright-Phillips - if West Ham get him for 10m I'll be gutted. We've still got 1st refusal on him.

Just found this one for ya!

MIKE DOYLE'S DIARY

17 December 1969: United 2, City 2 League Cup semi-final; City won 4-3 on aggregate. "When Denis Law put United 2-1 up, the aggregate scores were level. Then the ref gave us a free-kick, but Alex Stepney didn't realise it was indirect. Franny Lee hit it and if Alex had let it go in, it wouldn't have counted. But he palmed it to Mike Summerbee, and we then beat West Brom in the final."

17 December 1970: United 1, City 4 League. "George Best's horrific tackle on Glyn Pardoe broke his leg. Glyn was and still is a great mate and when I saw Bobby Charlton holding Glyn's leg, I went after Best and had him round the throat. Had Tony Book and Brian Kidd not intervened, I would probably have killed him. The next three tackles I made on Best were explosive - but fair."

27 April 1974: United 0, City 1 League. "It was possible for United to stay up if they beat us and Birmingham lost. But it was unfortunate for them to be playing us in the last game, because we were a far better side than them. Denis [Law] scored near the end and we were a bit downhearted they got relegated because it meant four guaranteed points gone the following season."

ledge 04.12.2006 07:53 PM

were discussing this at work and to be fair,

We were discussing this at work and to be fair although he wasn't touched, if he hadn't jumped over the tackle he would have been brought down. It was a bad challenge and the penalty was deserved.

matsa 05.12.2006 12:44 PM

Ledge mate. That was a dive.

as I say if he hadn't lifted his foot he would have been touched and would have gone down. That was a poor challenge by the keeper.

And if he hadn't of gone down he would have scored anyway.

I'm no fan of man u, but christ you don't dive and take the risk of a penalty when you have an open goal in front of you.

Drammy 05.12.2006 05:38 PM

Whether he dived or not - it was a pen.

Schwarzer prevented a goal scoring opportunity and got no where near the ball.

matsa 05.12.2006 07:09 PM

Keeper is there to make himself as big as possible and prevent goal scoring opportunities, no?

He thought CR was going to his left, but he went right instead. No doubt in my mind he dragged his foot looking to make contact with the keeper who in no way fouled him.

Drammy 05.12.2006 08:37 PM

That is indeed the job of a goalie - but if the only reason for no contact is the agility of the attacking player managing to get out of the way then the ref is perfectly correct to award a pen.

Why should the attacker be penalised just because he managed to get out of the way?

It was a pen!

ten 06.12.2006 06:16 AM

Either way hes still a greasy little spic that deserves to be fucked and burnt.
