Motherboard and soundcard
 

I am upgrading my System.....I'm still looking at loads of different options...
And was wondering what Motherboard and soundcard you are using with the Ti and if it runs stable?? Only ti users using USB/VC

Asus P4P-800 E with RME HDSP 9632 running fine here.

Porbably going to upgrade to a dual core 64 bit though soon, the P4P800-E maybe a bit outdated now...

Supermicro H8DCE motherboard with a Lynx two - C soundcard.

Running pretty much flawlessly here with the TI. Lynx drivers are rock and the sound quality is unrivaled imho.

Hi Ten mate i was looking around at those Lynx cards as they seem very good,but do they have Mic inputs cause i couldn't see any..

i'm looking at a Core 2 Duo processor.I been havin' a butchers around the sound on sound forum and they seem the best at the moment for Audio.Even better than the Dual core 64's

Nae, no mic input on em....although you could plug an xlr mic straight into one the of the inputs unamped I guess :)

Been away for 3 weeks on holiday and had some other stuff to sort out. Back at it now though so will be posting again :)

Yea, I sold it on. RME has a problem with its drivers that they are VERY reluctant to admit. After extensive testing using Nuendo, Cubase and RME cards me and a bunch of other people on the Nuendo forum discovered a reload bug that would cause high cpu useage for no apparent reason. RME blame Steinberg etc etc. We tested other cards and didnt find the same problem so I ditched it for a Lynxtwo which I must say is an amazing card. The drivers are SOLID and the sound is lush, even better than the fireface sounded. Deffo worth checking out.

ten: what are the symtoms of the RME reload bug again? Is it possible to have the RME Fireface 800 and not have this bug?

glad I saw your post. I am just starting to build a new system and was going to go with the fireface. I will now start looking at the lynx. thanks for the info.

It happens on all RME soundcards, including the firewire ones. The problem is when your using a project, finish and save up for the day, when you come back to it and load up again, for no apparent reason the cpu usage will be higher. We tried several cards (me the ff800) over several systems and several driver releases quite extensively and it happened every time. I even noticed it myself before doing these tests using my own projects and I just put it down to the complexitiy of todays daws....but now we know different. The same tests run on Echo, Emu and Lynx cards did not produce the same bad results as on the RME kit.

Of course it might only be certain situations/projects this problem arises....but it DOES happen, and thats the issue.

Unfortunately, the RME top guy (Matthais) was quick to shun this information saying he will not comment on the topic at all which worries me even more.

RME hinted they had fixed the problem over several driver releases, but according to people I know still with the cards it actually has not been fixed at all.

Very glad I got rid of mine when I did, having so much fun with the Lynx card now.

Just quickly, how much CPU increase?

Also the only cpu influence I notice with the RME is with the mixer app open, and I think that was a thing of the past also, that always felt like 5% to 10% cpu but not so much now.

Didnt really investigate it that much. It pissed me off so much I sold my fireface pretty much the same day and bought a Lynx. According to a few people I have spoke to its still there though even with the latest drivers.

Ten: would you give a figure of cpu percentage to the bug?

As I said I didnt get to much in depth with it myself, I got rid of the RME asap. It was 7-10% extra cpu added on though, which meant projects you originally thought worked fine on your system simply may not when reloaded....terrible bug.

when i get a sound card for this computer it's more than likely going to be a Motu PCI-E card. because thus far of the cards i've heard (edirol, e-mu, m-audio, rme, mbox etc) motu seems to have the best sound for me.

edit : one thing to keep in mind about amd dual core vs intel dual core. intel's dual cores aren't bridged, so if one processor needs to know what the other one does, it has to go through the computer first. whereas with amd, they have a pipeline going between. thus making the amd processor faster at making calculations than the intel.

I was looking on getting a Core 2 Duo Pentium...but i was told it might not be supported by Logic 5.5.1. as its Dated......See this link.

I will not change from 5.5.1 as i love it and all our songs are on it...
..Maybe it might be better getting an AMD...????

Pentium D (dual core) @ 3.6GHz, 2 Gigs RAM 1066FSB RAM on an Asus P5WD2-E Premium (PCI Express) mobo. Audio is via Firewire using one of the ports on the mobo that is apprently on the PCI express bus, so low latency seem to work very well (2-3ms).

should be fine as long as you don't use 64 bit windows.

Defintely, i have used amd for a long time, and it's done very well in my studio, if you look at people who have a history of their computer crashing, its typically an intel. generally, intels are built for document and database related work, and aren't really suited for multimedia. thats the job of amd. if you look at the cpu specs, and what features it supports, amd is always ahead of the game. amd is cheaper, and these days, a better performer too .if you are a logic freak just get a mac instead and run logic 7. i have that in my studio and i absolutely adore it.


edit again : i totally agree with the thread, if you are really a logic head, you NEED 7. period. if you wanna stick to pc, and have it take advantage of the dual core, start doing your new projects in cubase. i have dual processor on my mac, and since 6 it's been taking advantage of both processors. and 7 is backwards compatible with 5.5. Now that the new mac pro's are out, you could get one of those for 1k USD less than an equal spec dell. use that money to buy logic 7 and the universal binary upgrade.

AND...logic 7 has sculpture, AND ultrabeat.
