A comment from Khazul in another thread got me thinking...

Anyone out there managed to record one of these yet?

The problem is that anyone who has experienced this phenomena scrambles for every volume/power switch in sight to avoid damage to equipment.

I have read a post from one user stating both of the tweeters in his alesis monitors blew simultaneously as a result of the satan saw...

guess he shouldnt have bought alesis monitors :wink: im kidding, of course...

After mucho tracking and stalking - eventually captured one alive: 30 seconds of raw satanic sawdom :). I think this one was a juvenile - not as vicious as the grown up ones :)

Ill probably take this file off after a few days to conserve my site bandwidth - grab it while you can :)

I know this subject has been done to death, but as Ive said before - anyone who get their monitors blown up by this was gonna loose their monitors anyway eventually for one reason or other due to inadequate gain control - and yes - also for choosing monitors that were obviously not suitable for a studio environment where silly things happen (mics left on, guitars left with gain maxed etc, midi CC7 sent to a synth at the wrong time etc...)...

There has been much more dscussion re Satan's Saw on the Ampfea mailing list - that might be the best place to get some samples HC.

Thanks heaps for that sample Khazul! It doesn't sound how I expected actually, but I'll see what I can do with it.

Yeah I was thinking of putting something on that list, but seeing as I know all of you guys it was more logical here - don't wanna seem as if I'm creating something based on the misfortune of others.

Anyway, that "Satan's Saw" would be horrific if you weren't expecting it! Does it come out at a louder volume than the patches being played, or at a louder volume than even the main volume outs?

As I said - not the most nasty one Ive encountered. It you look at the waveform, you can see why its a bit wimpy - lots of dead space in it. I did manage to get a MachineDrum to coax a drum kit out of it - unsuprisingly, similar to a glitch kit. The kick was useful though to MD seems able to make a useful kick out of just about anything :)

As for volume - yes - *much* louder. Basically is raw digital garbage thats being dumped into the DACs, and because its basically wide band coloured noise - then theres a huge amount of energy in it, often centered around a few tones.

If you want to know what a really nasty one sound like - find a .exe binary and somehow persuade something like audacity that its actually raw audio data and play it :)

Cmon HC lets be honest - that was your intention from the outset :roll: :wink:

By the way, I would love to hear what you have come up with on the machine-drum Khazul if you get a chance.
I started work on a few patches yesterday and they turned pretty interesting. I'll do a few more this week sometime, then post the results. :D

I created a few patches with Khazul's Satan's Saw and have uploaded them onto my Soundclick site.
They didn't turn out like I thought they would, but I still thought you guys might wanna listen to them.

The sound at the very end of the file is actually the real Satan's Saw wave for some reference.

How about posting a few of those SatanSaw-Machinedrum sounds Khazul? I'b be keen to hear what you are doing with that thing.
