psytrance kick's
Im looking for good psytrance kick's
i have a lot of wav samples but nothing sound like the real thing WHY ?? PLEASE HELP Thanks |
What do you mean they dont sound like the real thing? 8O
|
I'm not sure what a psytrance kick is either, but many times what I'll do if I need to make a sound fit in a song (ie a certain kick sound etc.) is combine two or three sounds together. I'll either cut or eq out the overlapping parts and shape the external edges of the sound (the eq boundaries) until I get the exact sound I am looking for. Then trigger that sound via your sampler of choice or import the sound file into your sequencer of choice.

Yeah, It's always a challenge to get that killing Infected mushroom kick, but i think a lot of the magic depends on the mix. infected has the drum really up front and the rest of the arrengment are never overwhelming.
They posted a kick clinic somewhere on their website. |
I.F.M use NEVE EQ and processing on the kicks!
|
psytrance kick:
nord g2 is great for this. also waldorf attack vst is pretty good. u can also do decent ones on the virus. I say the nord g2 is the best in the department as far as hardware is concerned. also check out the forums at isratrance.com, there is a thread called "the mother of all psytrance kicks" infected mushrooms site also has a tutorial if u use soundforge.. hope this helps... and when u get that slammin kick send me the .wav! |
Infected do have great mixing&engneering skills.

Will the Virus TI remote page have a control setup for the Nord Modular G2 RACK? That would be wicked 8)
|
will it have a cup holder and vibrating/pulsating knobs to fight my carpal tunnel syndrome ?

I made a cracking kick drum one time using nothing more than an initially dry TR sample from a MC505(!). Post-processing was the key (using Wavelab, plugins, and an external compressor). Think I shaped it using an external single-band compressor, with multi-band-compression and also a subtle sprinkling of distortion using plugins. The multi-band compressor was used to radically manipulate the EQ in addition to the dynamics. A transient follower (Dominion) may also have been used at some point to alter the overall envelope and add "snap" to the start and fading out the tail.

Off topic, but change your working habits and ergonomics. Carpal tunnel syndrome / RSI is pretty harmful, and eventually debilitating. Prevention is better than cure. Don't neglect/ignore the symptoms. 8O |
I was told by a little birdie that they use fruity loops to make Kicks
There are some good mods can be done to old analogue drum machines such as the 909 and the 808> analogue solution mods and others. |
Eq + Compression very important for psy shots
|
infected mushroom make their kick drums in sound forge by using FM and generating a 60 hz sine wave. then they use the pitch bend tool and draw an exponential slope. change the slope to give he kick drum different properties. then pitch bend it again along a different slope (again, experiment) and voila, you have a psy kick. sounds like a squelchy knocking sound.
other psy kicks vary. alot of the organic records collective seem to use similar sounding kicks. i eventually found out what it was by pure accident - its a kick drum on the vengeance essentials club sounds vol1 sample CD. the relevant kick sample is in the 'sub bass drums folder' but i forget the kick number. if you have heard pop stream - oom da then you will recognise that kick instantly. failing that you can recreate psy kicks using your virus. single oscillator. sine wave. send it through LFO1 and select envelope mode. then select LFO shape as a SAW wave. now adjust the LFO rate whilst bending the pitch of oscillator 1 downwards. keep the filter open and have envelope mode on 127. adjust the release time to determine the length of the tail and the decay to adjust the click/thump part of the drum. |

here you go.. If you want to make fullon psy trance.... this is where you will find a great resource on everything from making kicks , fullon basslines and engineering ect ect http://forum.isratrance.com/viewforum.php/forum/2 http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopi...orum/2/start/0 Heres a link to the kick tutorial others were talking about.. http://www.infected.co.il/futureCity...ic%20Tutorials :) |
Well it?s easy to get a sample of a psy kick by shaping the sample like infected have in their kick tutorial. But the post refers to the guy having the kicks but they don?t sound like the real thing right? What makes the IMF Kick sound so sweet is the processing they use btw. They have a NEVE strip with EQ and Neve compression on it. They use smart gating and smart EG. You can have the same kick they use but it won?t sound Ubb without that processing!
http://www.ams-neve.com/html/products/8051.php :P Check this buy out http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...category=23793 It?s the way the rest of the sounds are mixed tuned and eq and gated around the Kick that makes it ring  |
nah,
no way they spent that much money on a single channel strip. israelies are too cheap to do so  anyhow, URS is coming out with a clasic compessor boundle which will include the famouse sound of the SSL and Neve consoles compressor\limiters. they also have some great sounding Eqs which are modeled after some of the most famouse and expenssive consoles and standalone eq units. |
Yeah the URS stuff is AWESOME so far.
The eqs are fantastic, looking forward to buy the comp! |
post processing is going to be important of course. i neglected to mention that so thanks for the heads up.
but you do not need a neve compressor to make infected kicks!. you can synthesize them in soundforge and then pitch bend them again. thats for the shape of the kick. if you look at alot of 'knocking' psy kick drums in a spectrum analyser they start dead on and oscillate along a sine wave that is flat and at high amplitude. then it tails off in an inverse exponential tail. depending on the result from soundforge you will probably need to overdrive it (to add some kind of harmonic content) and run it through some tubes or valves to warm it up. if you are feeling really frisky, reimport it back into soundforge and open an 808 kick sample (you can synthesise something like it in soundforge using FM i you dont have one). then fade in the 'click' part of the drum and layer it with the psy kick drum to add some extra sub bass weight. depending on the end result of that you may or may not want to compress it. or you could compress it first, then do the overdriving, warming up afterwards. |

Oh yes they do have Neve strip. I noticed the change in their production as soon as they got it, the older albums when you hear the kick it sounds flat. Now they have the Neve you hear the differences. Its like saying KOXBOX/SAIKO-POD use soundforge to get their kicks lol, or underworld just use a TR909 for their kick, it?s just not true. The reason underworlds kick sounded so nice was Darren Emerson's big fat processing rack. :P since he left the underworld kick has lost its edge. So get a Neve if you can afford it and have the sound to back the kick   |
they must have got a discount then or scamed ebay (lol)
|
I use the vst ISM Bazzism for my psy kicks.
Really recommended ;-) |
Kill most of the low end (63Hz) of the kick and bring out 80 - 100Hz a bit. The kick has to be flat as hell and not interfere with the bass line. It's not all that difficult. Oh, remember very short decay. Flat and punchy!

One trick I have used a lot, especially on drums, and especially on the kick drum, is to pass it (ie only the kick) through a compressor with the following settings:
Ratio: Max Threshold: Min Attack: Max Release: Min This makes the kick very much louder, but also gives it a fairly even dynamic with a nice snapping sound at the very start of the waveform. I sometimes compress the sound again after this stage to tame the snappiness a bit, but I've found it a good way to get a really massive, punchy-sounding kick. Hopefully this works between different compressors and wasn't just an artefact of that particular model....hmm... -Annikk |
http://rapidshare.com/files/392830630/My_kicks.zip - catch some kick what I use. Some cut out from tracks, some do by myself with virus or Audition, some from other libraries, but edited a little bit.
Maybe you find some of that kicks useful. |
Cheers Coax!
