Edirol R-1
What do you think of this one? Saw it in a magazine, it looks awesome! But is it 430 dollars worth?

Ahh come on, just save your money, get a nice lil mic and a preamp and you'l have better quality for less munny
|
Then i'd only be able to record at home!
I appreciate your oppinion but i'd like a PORTABLE mic and i wanted to know if this is a good one. Sorry if i haven't explained myself good enough. |
Yes kinda misunderstood you there :D Thought you just wanted to be quick with an all in one :?
Anyway, can't really help you on this one, I'm more of a studio guy  -VR :D |
I would have concerns about...
Mic quality: I have never heard of a proffessional-standard internal mic. Can it really be good? FX: FX shouldn't be it's best feature. My experience tells me that onboard 'extra' FX can be pretty average. You can get all the VST FX you want anyway. Storage: Comes with just 64MB storage?! That will get you 5 mins of recording. A nice 2GB card will set you back another $50. Pick up a quality mic for $100 Do a little research and find out which portable MiniDisc recorder has a good reputation for its recording and buy one on Ebay. I'm not a fan of all-in-one solutions. |
How can you compare a shitty MD player to a 24 bit recorder :?:
|
Well, its true that they have a semi-pro reputation, plus these new Sony HMD or something (1 gig capacity's) record high quality and are cheap :D
No point in recording 24bit, if you are using an internal 'stereo' mic :P -VR |

So what will you be using it for???
Just curios.... |
To record. You see, i dont have a labtop, and i dont want to be limited to only home recordings. I want to be able to bring it places, record atmospheres ect.
|
I would say that spending your money on this would be a complete waste.
You would be better off buying a portable DAT recorder, and a decent stereo/MS rig. Perhaps something like Rode NT4. You wont get the desired results with something like this, it will be sub-par. |

Newer portable Sony Hi-MD Minidisc systems can record in high quality. Either in uncompressed PCM (wav-like) format or as 256kbps ATRAC3, which is pretty much equal to mp3. Not that a 24-bit digital recorder is much use for an internal mic anyway... :P Oh and each 'Hi-MD' Minidisc is 1GB. A lot more capacity than this Edirol comes with. |
I get your points, and i decided to get a Hi-MD along with a stereo mic.
Thanks for saving me 100$ :D ![]() |
Your friends is what you can count on :D Good luck with the recordings!

Sony allways seemed to have something against mp3 in the past and kept trying to push their own format. Ive been looking for a convenient contraption for capturing ideas etc. |

No, I think sony still uses the ATRAC3 format, its a bit better than mp3 quality/size wise.

Yeah all their MD's go with it but i think some of them also supports wav.

But it its mp3 - then further conversion can only get worse. I got a creative zen as a freebie a while back and use that for now - it does have one *huge* advantage tho - as well as mp3 - it natively supports windows media formats as well. The only issue with it for me is while it does have a mic on it and can record, recording is fiddly to get at and the result is crap if you are trying to capture melody ideas etc when away from base. Still - it makes for a useful final mix check for mp3s - sound quality aint great, but its representative of an average mp3 player. |
If you compare 2 types of compression, it should be obvious that you don't compare em compressing each other 8O
