Arturia Storm
Anybody tried this one out? I just was wandering around a noticed this thing on Arturia page. Seems like a very nice Reason-like software.

Its 'orrible sounding!
I tried it for a few hours when building a new DAW for a friend. I found it quite restrictive and didn't think it sounded good at all. |

I think this was brought out to rival Reason..... I read a review in a local AudioTech magazine, I will try and dig it up as I remeber it being quite a comprehensive review, and quite descriptive too. |

It's a metaphor for life.....
"Sometimes the answer is right in front of our eyes" Happens to me alot, especially in the mornings :) Enjoy the demo! Let us know what you think of it too..... |
I tried a demo of this on a disk I had and didn't like it. It sounds cheap and amateurish and is not that well laid out either.
|
I had totally forgot this thing. Now I quickly tested it. The sound is way better than in Reason (but also seems to be a more CPU hungry). Nice software that easily outperforms Reason but it's just not my cup of tea. I'll test this some more...
Edit: Taking some words back. This bloody thing doesn't seem to have any kind of sampler (except those loop things). Edit 2: Seems to be a piece of crap now. G??. |
Wow! From great to terrible.....
I may have to try out the demo to see what all the fuss is about. |
lol great review juho

The all in one, inside the box, software solutions aren't cutting it at all at the moment. Some great ideas coming through, but the quality isn't matching the idea level at all. Usabilty vs Quality.
On the topic of soft vs hard....hehe I listened to Prodigy's Fat of the Land and the newest album on monitors the other day. What a fucken huge contrast!!!! What the hell was he thinking. Don't get me wrong there a few tracks I like off the new album, but the sounds, production and general quality has been lost. FOTL has tight bass, great high-end, unbelievable sub-bass, kicks to die for, snappy snares and the frequency seperation is very nice (specially considering the complexity level). The new one has messy bass, splashy high-end, and very little clear seperation with the drums on many tracks. The whole sound of the album is uniform, over-limited/compressed and harsh on the ears. It's just not as tight. Is this due to poor programming in Reason? I don't know. I have heard some nice tracks to come out of reason, but 98% seem to have this horrible quality. Mmmm. Give me the 32bit float of Cubase and some hardware anyday. |

I think I read an interview somewhere, saying that Liam Howlett hated FOTL.....or was it the stuff after that? Baby's got a temper.....he hated it! And with this latest release, he is getting back to his roots..... For me, the prodigy ended with Jilted Generation, and Experience was by far the best thing Liam Howlett has done....Simply awesome! I think your view is tarnished cos of your hate for Reason...... Reason has it's uses.......actually, probably the only thing I use reason for is creating my own beats. I upload my own samples, use Reasons drum machine to program patterns, then bring them into SX for processing...it does a fine job. Oh, and the sampler is cool too, has some nice orchestral/piano/rhodes/wurli's etc.....but I'd use my Motif/Virus before any of the Reason Synths. Also, there's no denying Liam Howlett is extremely talented.....an amazing drum programmer....I dont think he would be using a program that didnt live up to his high standards of quality and usability. He simply would not stand for inferior sounding instruments... |
I think he would be using a program that don't live up to his high standards of quality and usability. He simply would stand for inferior sounding instruments because Propellerheads pay for him.
Only usable thing in Reason are the drum machine and Dr.REX. The Reson just sounds bad. For example listen to SubTractors simple saw. It sounds like bloody wounded fly or something. YYYIIIYYYIIYYYYIIYIYYYIIIYYY. Annoying at its best. This icredible quality of the synths combined to the mixing algortihm that's even worse than ones on trackers we get a tasty soup that guarantees that to get something decent out you'll have to work hours and hours just to get rid of the crappy muddy sound. I see no reason for using Reason (no pun intented). Reason costs 400 euros. For that price you could get Cubase SE, Native Instruments Battery and Kompakt + loads of free VST plugins that beat Reason equivalents. |

I reckon a Propellorheads endorsement is worth alot from Liam Howlett....probably alot of sales. But Im not sure he would risk his reputation for a bit more cash and some free software. He has alot of money....I cant imagine Propellorheads could entice him unless it was a HUGE amount.....and I mean H*U*G*E |

Oops, what have I triggered off here!?
I'm not only talking about Reason though. Also Abelton live is another candidate for usability vs quality. When I first read about the specs and watched the demo vids I was impressed with Live4, but after hearing more of what was coming out I felt there was a lack in quality. Exporting audio still has strange quality to it - I find that happens with Reason too. I read an interview with Liam in which he had said that he liked using reason because it took his mind away from how to set-up and do things in studio, and put his mind in pure creative mode. I can fully understand what he means by this, but the sacrifice in quality is more than just a little obvious. I couldn't do it, and I'm sorry he could. Like I said though, I have heard some nice stuff come from Reason, but you wouldn't see a FOTL come from it I wouldn't think. The stuff that I've heard that seems to sit alright is straight electronica. I think the tools in this type of "all in one" software that allow for endless routing configs and real time pitch/tempo shifting of audio on sperate channels, plus many other studio short-cuts just can't measure up, mainly due to the fact they are writing the software to match todays computer/soundcard power. In a few years it will be a different story though. I'm not a Reason hater though. The ideas behind it are really great and I think this type of stuff will be the future in years to come. I just don't think computer power can handle it at the moment. Or more specifically it's written for the current level of computer power - Live4 is a huge example of this. |

Good/valid points there HC! |
Oh, your online there Jase!
You caught me in the middle of an edit. I added on the last paragraph after re-reading your post. |
Yup. HC has a point there. The main problem with all-in-one packages is that they don't do anything well. They are medicore at best in everything. Although those all-in-one programs are good for making quick drafts of tracks, but they really are not suitable for anything final. They just don't have the quality. Some people might be very satisfied with Reason, but I have a disease called perfectionism and it just won't allow me to do anything in lower quality I could be able to do.

Hasn't Liam been somewhat "misquoted" (lack of better word).
I remember when reading the article that he thought Reason was very good to quickly put down some ideas, and not speaking anything about the program as a whole. I'm not sure I remeber it right either :) Anyway, I have made some pretty 'ok' tunes in Reason myself (some might even be available on a record soon ;) ) The only 'real' problem I've had is getting really FAT sounds. Reason is great because of its intuitive interface which is something I miss having switched to Cubase (because of its better midi implementation) :) |

Cubase may seem a bit confusing after Reason, but actually Cubase is billion times more flexible than Reason. It is even pretty intuitive and very logical. |

An exact quote from Liam about Reason from the Nekozine site bellow... "Cause it's everything in one box and there's no confusion for sort of bringing in complicated equipment. All you're dealing with is what your brain can think of." Quote:

Hollow, yes that's why I said "misquoted" was maybe a wrong word :D
This wasn't really pointed at you at all :) The thing I meant was that, not only in this discussion but in general people go around saying that Prodegy produces their tracks in Reason (especially Reason users put a lot of effort in saying this in many discussions :)). As far as I can read, the only things he really uses from Reason are the NN-XT, the Re-Drum and the Dr-Rex. What do all of these have in common? Answer: The are all sample-players. This actually means that he could just as well use any other program that is sample-based (Who said E-Jay? :D). He also uses the Scream 4 effect, which is basicly your standard distortion effect. So, he actually doesn't say anything about the sound of the program, as many Reason users sometimes uses this article to argue for. |
Also I think that Reason on it's own is a pretty average program, but when used with Cubase (SX) via ReWire is where it really begins to shine!
Lets say I open up a ReDrum, take all of it's individual outputs and port them via ReWire into seperate channels in SX. This way, I can use all SX EQ, dynamics processing, automation, Plugs etc as I would a normal 'audio' channel in SX.....bypassing Reasons internal mix buss, FX etc.... I think Reason, if used correctly, and in conjunction with something like SX, is a force to be reckoned with! So lets take a look at how Reason should be used....... Step #1 - Forget about your Subtractors, Malstroms etc....as was said earlier, Reason shines when using ReDrum, NN19, NNXT, DrRex...If you want some synth action, use your Virus...and if you dont have a virus, go get one! Step #2 - You need to be using it in conjunction with a sequencer that has ReWire support, and Cubase SX is probably the best option here. ProTools supports ReWire with Reason, but is very limited (ie only 2 ReWire channels) Step #3 - Use your sequencer for everything! FX, EQ, etc.....ReWire channels are like audio channels, meaning they have full capabilities, not limited options like a MIDI channel. For each Reason instrument you have, plug it's output into it's own Rewire channel (which will show up in SX) And by all means, use the Reason sequencer for drum patterns.....or record them in SX as you would a normal external MIDI device/ MIDI controller combination. There.....I've had my little rant :) I feel better now. P.S I tried out Storm. it's SHIT! |
Quote:
You dont use Cubase instead of Reason, you use Cubase with Reason! ;) Try it....once you get used to how things work, you will never turn back..... Gosh, I think Propellorheads should sponser me! I am the biggest Reason guy there is! P.S maybe we should change the Subject of this post to read: Arturia Storm Vs Reason? |

I don't dispute the tools in reason are really nice ideas indeed. However, I don't think the non-synth parts of reason are entirely transparent though. They still add a colour to the sound (which in some genres can be fitting or even complimentary). Just the same way an Akai sampler can add that "snap" to a snare. I guess I just don't like the sound that comes from it that much. Quote:

Bringing out ye dead!
What i read; was that Liam was tired of what cubase-version he was using but a friend of him told him to look into Reason; which he did. He liked the program (and hated the sound of the subtractors) so he sampled everything. So 100% of those songs is samples from his hardware/analogue gear then he'd use Dr.rex to get different types of loops from those samples. And he thought Reason was quite a nice program to have in his laptop whenever he got an idea, he could quickly put them down as a working mix. I'll see if i got some links left; http://www.propellerheads.se/news/ar...rticle=prodigy That's the only one left working, and it's an interview with Liam -> I had another link were he said something similiar - but he said; Subtractor was really bad, and malstr?m had some intresting effects but just lacked the sound-quality aswell |
Yeah....so when people say, "The new prodigy album done entirely in Reason...." it is bullshit!
In fact, he would have mixed through an analogue console, used none of the samples that come with Reason, exported all loops into PT for FX/Processing, and also used all his analogue synths to replace bass sounds There is alot more than we know.....I saw a video interview somewhere, just google it! |
