Interesting... I'm kind of disappointed with how Virus sounds compared to others... Here's how I would rate these synths in terms of "fatness". Please keep in mind that this is my personal opinion:

1. Waldorf Pulse
2. Moog Prodigy
3. Evolver
4. Waldorf Q
5. Synth1
6. Virus KB
7. PPG Wave

That's how they sound to MY ears. I'd love to hear what others have to say

I got the same as you remedy ^^

*The pulse patch might have been using 3 oscilators for all we know :)

All sound quite different, very different, but I wonder how they actually constructed the patch that could be translated and reconstructed successfully, from a programming perspective, across all the units.

ben crosland 12.07.2004 12:11 AM

A lot of what you're hearing is just in the patch construction.

I can get pretty damn close to all of those sounds with the Virus. I didn't bother trying to copy the MicroQ sound though which sounds absolutely horrible to me!

DJ REMIDI 12.07.2004 05:16 AM

Hey Ben,
I'm not questioning your ability to program sounds, but I'd really like to hear a more convincing analog bass from the Virus. I personally have a hard time getting a bass sound similar to that of the posted Pulse patch. Care to post some samples? :)

Which Virus do you own, DJ Remidi?

DJ REMIDI 12.07.2004 09:27 PM

Ben, I have a Virus Powercore - exact same thing as a Virus B.

I'm looking forward to hearing those samples

My weblog told me, that there were several hits from this forum to this pretty old part of my homepage

So I thought it could be useful to clarify a few things:

First, I made this little test just for fun and to test if my personal synth programming skills would be sufficient to program at least similar sounds on several synths. I didn't put too much effort into programming in terms of identical sounds.
As Ben already said and as one can hear, there are considerable differences in envelope times, amounts detune and so on.
Most important is the fact that there are significant volume differences. Most people considered the loudest sound to be the best

So please look upon this "test" just as a fun project and don't take it too serious.

I am sure that Ben Crosland can reprogram most of the examples on a Virus. But why should he ? It's not a very interesting sound
