Creating Pink-Floyd Synth Sound From Welcome To The Machine

Can someone Create the lead sound from "welcome To The Machine"?
Im gussing it's a Moog but dont know for sure..this sound has some
Kind of a weird electrical flow like an electric current it's awesome.
Im quite a beginner with keyboards and synth programming but I tried
To recreate this sound on my VC and I almost got there but still
Something was missing I guss it's this electrical flow texture. if
Any of you guys success to create that sound with the Virus I'd love to hear it..Take care and thanks.

Heck. I don't have that record but I've heard a live version of it. I can't recall what sound you mean. Could you post a short clip here?

Excalibur 19.12.2003 11:07 PM

Hi Juho! OK I think i got it, i cutted, pasted, converted and here it is
Its just a short clip but i think youll get the vibe.
By the way the song is taken from Pink-Floyd's Album "Wish You
Were Here".http://home.ripway.com/2003-12/45503...meMP3Short.mp3

Yup. I know.

Basic Moog lead.

Oscillators: Osc1: +0 saw, Osc2: +12 or +24 (try which one sounds better) saw. Add just a bit detune.

Filters: 24dB filter (Ser6, bal -63) with average resonance. Set cutoff to about half way and set envelope amount to 80 or more and set decay to quite slow so you would get that delayed envelope you hear there (at first it's at maximum and then starts to drop after a second or two).

Effects: Add analog boost. Add delay with zero feedback with delay time around 100ms. Set panorama to -63 and (I'm not sure is this next thing global or patch setting. If it's global, don't bother to change it) delay output to Out1 R (control menu, if I recall it right). You might also add some chorus (not much, just a little bit).

Tweak there.

Edit: And of course set keyboard mode to mono1 and add some portamento (about 32).

Fast LFO with aftertouch controlling the depth. I forgot the vibrato completely.

Juho L 20.12.2003 12:02 AM

When you make that patch post a mp3 clip of it here. I want to hear it. I don't have any synths to test that patch myself so I'd like to know how well I got it right by just following my instincts.

Excalibur 20.12.2003 12:12 AM

Sorry Juho but i'm afraid i dont have the equipment to do that..
Maybe i'll get a decent computer soon but right now i'm very
Limited (not to talk about that i'm actually a guitar player and
only recently i started playing keyboards)
As for the LFO i got the impression that it's controlling the filter
Cutoff and is kind of slow..am i wrong?

Well, that's ok.

No. The filter is controlled by the envelope. You can hear that when the note is played the filter is at maximum for 1-2 seconds and then drops. That's envelope. Not LFO. LFO controls the pitch of the Osc1&2 to create a vibrato.

You know what Juho? heres something i recorded a while ago
(not on the computer) in atempt to reach this sound..Please dont

I could come.www.stage.co.il/media/excalibursmith187269.mp3

udenjoe 20.12.2003 05:12 AM

Nice tune. I think it needs some FX sounds thrown in or some voice narration to complete it.

Sounds quite 80'ish. It's like an 80's remix of that song.

At this point i'm just glad it sounds like any thing :)
Thanks alot for all you'r help Juho and i hope i'll get to you soon with
that sound.in the mean time if anyone else has the resorces to make
a clip with juhos instructions, please do.

Excalibur 20.12.2003 09:50 PM

OK Juho,i did what you said and came very close,i guss it will never
Sound exactly like the real thing, after all a moog is totally analog
But it's a nice emulation. i've added a ring mod wich seemed to help
But other wise i did all what you said..it's really amazing you can
Analize a sound and knowing how to build it just by ear.
Just one stupid question please: you told me to use saw waves on
Both oscilators, how the heck can i make sure theyre saw.on the LCD
All i see is wave:sin, wave:tri and then sin with numbers wave:sin1
Wave:sin2 etc only on osc 3 i have a wave:saw display, i went by
Ear on this one but for general education, what is the saw wave?
Thanx

ben crosland 21.12.2003 09:44 AM

Set Osc1/2 Shape = 64 for a pure Saw Wave.

ben crosland 21.12.2003 09:47 AM

Don't forget that if you're trying to get emulate a Moog sound, it would make sense to use the new 'Moog' filter :)

Set Filter 1 to LP Analog 4P, and Filter Balance to -64 to get the authentic Moog Ladder effect.

Excalibur 21.12.2003 01:43 PM

Thanks alot ben, that was very helpful,i guess i should take the manuel
More seriously.as for the new os -i'm "dyeing" to try that filters allready
But becouse i dont have a midi interface on my comp i need to take
My indigo2 to the local dealler so he will update it.i'll get to it soon..
Thanks again.

They don't call me The King for no reason. But seriously that was pretty easy and simple patch (as every Minimoog patch is).

Juho L 20.01.2004 04:51 PM

I have no idea what the heck has happened here. Most of the new posts have dissapeared. But anyway here's the clip again:

Excalibur - Thanks :D and yes, I used the new OS6.5 Moog filter ladder set at 4 Pole. I'll re-attach two files here; (i) the "welcome.mid" patch file and (ii) I'll also try to attach a JPEG screenshot of the SoundDiver overview so you can see what's going on (sort of - some of the parameters don't fit on one screenshot)

As for the backing track to my demo MP3 - I had a moment of clarity (this is rare) and converted your original MP3 to a WAV, then pulled the WAV back into Logic's EXS24 sampler, found the only 2 bars of strumming where the original lead wasn't playing (about half way), and simply looped it ! Then I just played along to it (although I rushed it as it was late on Sunday night so my solo work wasn't good ). Bounced it all back down to WAV and the converted to MP3 - simple :D You can hear that the strumming has lost its definition from being converted back and forth between 128kbs MP3 & my Logic 24 bit 48KHz setting and then back again but at least it puts the Virus Welcome lead sound in some sort of context.

hmmmmm the JPEG won't attach. 8O

Juho, sorry to be a pain, but how do I attach a JPEG (it's only 267kb) ?

Well, here's still that file size limit.
