Good grief! Virus has for example excellent phaser which no software can beat!

Hollowcell 15.12.2003 12:52 AM

i use alot of quality software...but i prefer to run most stuff thru outboard FX before...I LOVE MY VF1!!!......i do use the EQs, phaser, delays and distortions off my VC a fair bit too...(does EQ count as FX!?!?!) hehe

i should mention too-most stuff is run thru a valve here and there as well!

Tomer=Trance 15.12.2003 04:48 AM

of course i use the virus's phaser and you are right
also use the corus but i dont use delay and reverb off the virus

Well, I guess I use a combination of hard/software depending on which is the right tool for the job. I use Waves a lot; I mean, you can't really beat Waves on things like reverb, EQ, compressors/limiters. But I like HW delays and choruses.

That probably doesn't do a thing to answer your question...

This is strange. Why you use hardware delay and software reverb? It should be other way around, my friend. Delay is so simple that there is no sense in using external effects for that one (its just playback with some slight additional modulation) but the reverb on the other hand is that kind of effect that I've only heard one VST reverb that sounds even slightly as good as my medicore Behringer reverb (and the plug-in wasn't Waves. Waves reverb is metallic nonsense reverb as 99% of the software reverbs are) and that plug-in took quite good amount of CPU.

If you're using a multieffect for your delays, I would advice to use software to delay and the fX-unit to reverb. Even bad HW reverb sounds as good as ok software one.

But what comes to the other Waves plug-ins, they're excellent! C4, L2, Q4 are the favourites.

The only good software reverb I've heard was a DX-plugin. Can't remember the name at the moment. 4040 or something like that.

But really HW beats SW reverbs. You just have to try it out by yourself.

scottyp 15.12.2003 02:31 PM

I agree - HW is where it's at. Try running your audio out of you computer and into the Virus - fan-friggin-tastic if you set it up right. Even my lexicon mpx200 sounds better than most SW, and it ain't all that good (it can get a bit noisy)

Tomer=Trance 15.12.2003 03:06 PM

hey i didnt say software is better then hardware :oops:
just that i prefer using software on the editing and building stage of the track
i know that plug in-its a boundle by event "dsp-fx" is the name
also has delay,corus,phaser and some other godies

Mash-up 31.12.2003 10:59 AM

im definately a bigger fan of hardware when it comes to synths, but i would say there are far more better options for fx on the Sw plugins.

i think (Juho) you are a wee bit too critical of the quality of the reverbs, but i suppose it all comes down to personal taste.

it would get a bit boring if we all liked and used the same sounds and Fx.

Six4Eight 31.12.2003 12:04 PM

I actually use both. I always record main leads etc. with Virus effects on them already. Some minor effects (sweeps / TB stuff etc) I might record plain and add effects later on. I use a lot of software FX though, also for drums.

Tomer=Trance 31.12.2003 03:50 PM

i think it has to do with a person's style of working...
and hey man nice seeing new members coming all the time
i like your music 648, keep it up! :)

udenjoe 02.01.2004 03:24 AM

I imagine if you have alot of processing power you can get some good effects chains on a PC or mac. Again that's DSP power.

Tomer=Trance 02.01.2004 05:04 AM

well i personaly was talking about vst effects.
dsp card are totaly different,they are hardware.... and they sound like hardware of course :D . my friend has a creamware card and it rox - on the fx side and the synth side it sounds great (dsp..) :)

Has anybody tried the impulse modeled reverb plugins?

You can try a free one here. (One of the best)

http://www.knufinke.de/sir/index_en.html

With Voxengo Impulse Modeler you can make your own impulse responses.

http://www.voxengo.com/imodeler/

There`s also some sample cd`s of impulses from different environment available, but there are impulses available on the web taken from hardware reverb units aswell

:D

TommyS 02.01.2004 10:05 AM

These are some links for impulses available on the web:

http://www.voxengo.com/impulses/

http://www.noisevault.com/index.php?page=3

And what i forgot was this impulse reverb plugin:

http://www.tascam.com/product_info.php?pid=324

:D

Juho L 02.01.2004 10:32 AM

That TommyS' link is interesting. Sounds good. But I think it has the same problem as my other good software reverb: It eats CPU like a mad man.
