Access Virus - Bass Sound Tutorial

Please post a .mid file of the Virus bass you've made + brief description of how it was made. I will include my .mid files shortly!

Blank 12.07.2003 09:16 AM

thats way too much work man...if we were going to post midi files why wouldnt the individual who downloads it just look at how u made it...thats how i learned what i know...if i uploaded one of my sounds it would either be a 4 paragraph essay or just "i dont know"...not to sound negitive...if any1 wants to do it go ahead im not going to stop u...but i think its a little too much to ask...hek i bet most ppl dont even know completely how they came up with the sound...i personally think luck has alot to do with it...u play with a sound till it works!!

peace

Ok fair comment Blank.....

*Cough Cough* Ermm... what I meant to say, post your best bass .mid files here so we can all upload them into our Virus' and see how it was made.

hehe

Yep agree. I just tweak the knobs until i get a sound I like. But now, I`m getting into the theory of it more from working with modular synths.

:D

Blank 16.07.2003 11:00 AM

the only way i think it is even possible to really know how to make what sound without just tweaking would have to be your whole life worth of experience...and/or a degree in synthesis...i know some stuff but its super general...but it is a little beyond the average user...

You can learn about synthesis by spending a few weekends in front of your Virus with the manual. It sounds a bit boring when all you want to do is get on with it and make tunes, but once you learn about it a bit, you can hear a sound in a tune and have a pretty good idea about how it's constructed.
You can also post sample of sounds you want to make on websites such as this and others and have experienced sound designers tell you how 8)

Filly 25.09.2003 10:29 PM

I've never used an avatar on any forum before, but this default one may just persuade me to go and get one!

Filly 25.09.2003 10:30 PM

........Ok it's gone now....

Blank 26.09.2003 08:47 AM

so filly r u good and sound design?

peace
Blank

Filly 26.09.2003 12:02 PM

I wouldn't say that, but I work on my own so I haven't got anyone to compare myself to.

I do usually make all my patches from scratch though.

Blank 26.09.2003 12:27 PM

Cool, so what kind of music do u do and u got any where i could hear some?

peace
Blank

Filly 29.09.2003 10:20 AM

I do trance, but am such a perfectionist, I haven't actually finished anything in about a year, as soon as I do, I'll let you hear it 8)

Tomer=Trance 29.09.2003 11:45 AM

hehe i havent finished a track over a year to :D
what kind of trance do you creat?

Filly 29.09.2003 03:46 PM

Hopefully driving and melodic without too much cheese, I like AVB style more then any other, what about you?

Tomer=Trance 29.09.2003 05:12 PM

oh yeah same here!
catching armin's set every week?

Bass on the virus:

Use all three oscillators (Sawtooth, yea) and a delta wave sub-osc.

Apply a moderate amount of bit-reduction in the filter section.

Stack at least 8 voices in unison.

Annihilate!!!

GothicIndustrial 09.08.2004 03:20 PM

Hey DS, fancy seeing you here! I tend not to use my Virus for bass. I can't get the powerful analog sounding deep bass from my Virus KB that just pours out of my Waldorf Pulse. I like the Virus more for those punchy midrange bass sounds. I like the Puncher preset, but with some distortion/saturation for added grit. Maybe a touch of fm, too. That type of sound works well over a deep subbass, or with a deep bassy kick drum.

I'm definately going to try JasonDeath's bass after work today. Maybe that will give my woofers a nice workout!

GothicIndustrial 10.08.2004 03:57 PM

I programmed a variation on Jason Death's suggested bass patch. It was awesome. I never realized just how much bass I could squeeze out of the Virus. By mixing the bright bit reduced sound of filter one with a very bassy dark, low cutoff sound on fiilter two, I made a bass on the Virus that had tons of punch and low end. I only used unison twin, btw. Easily as powerful as the bass coming from my Pulse, with added depth.

DIGITAL SCREAMS 11.08.2004 07:03 AM

Yo Gothic

U got a .mid file of that u could sling my way. Im interested to see what kinda sound ur talking about.

Thx man

DS

GothicIndustrial 11.08.2004 03:28 PM

If I have time tonight, I'll d/l the Virus Soundiver and get you the patches.

Gopal 19.10.2004 11:29 PM

would like a .mid file myself, having trouble gettin a bass from the virus that sits in the mix nicely. any help would be appreciated

GothicIndustrial 10.11.2004 08:10 PM

I'm sorry I never put up midi files. I'm doing grad school, lamaze (sp?) classes, moving, work, putting up with the wife... My studio isn't even together at the new house. I will try and do this when I can. Again, I appologize for not sending the midi files.

Anyway, I found that using the sinewave sub osc and keeping the filter on low (no unison) with a good dose of rectifier distortion produces a pretty badass bass sound.

mnj 28.03.2006 11:21 AM

BUMP.. I like this idea alot :P

Elektrobolt 29.03.2006 01:00 AM

I have to say to ANYONE who's interested in "programming" a Virus; read "Virus programming tutorial" on Access-Music's site http://www.access-music.de/downloads...virustidesktop (at the bottom of the page at the time of this post).

It was written by Howard Scarr, a very talented sound designer, who also made a bank and then some of the ROM sounds in your TI. The paper is VERY easy to follow and EXPLAINS how to create particular categories of sound.

dr. orange 29.03.2006 01:29 AM

Howard Scarr's patches are really the best amongst them all!
He creates patches that you really would have problems to even imagine whereas the patches of the other sounddesigners are bread'n'butter sounds that are very easy to create...

keep up the good work howard!

Dizz 31.03.2006 01:08 AM

Hi guys,
so what was Jason Deaths was of achieving this bass?
Can anyone post the midi file or his explanation please?
Cheers

I am sorry, but I do not agree with you on the b'n'b sounds!

Ben Crosland (yeah yeah, Ben, I am sorry about the dual sets of teeth :D but here comes the brown nosing) and the other lot are very VERY good sound designers, and have made IMHO excellent patches to demonstrate the power and versatility of the Virus.

I also like the Elements sound set created by Tarekith (can be downloaded from Access-Music's web site).

Tarekith 31.03.2006 11:27 AM

Thanks :)

I think that Mathew Stolley's soundsets have the best basses personally, especially his second one. You can get them on the Access site in the C series downloads.
