Synth/Gear you most regret BUYING

Novation Nova, sold it after 3 month. It lacks "brilliance" and just sounds....errrr cheap???

TommyS 19.06.2003 11:28 PM

Mc-505

Never use it anymore. Sequencer is ok. Synth engine sucks.

I was stupid to get one :?

If you feel the need to slap me for being so stupid, feel free :D

Blank 20.06.2003 12:23 AM

hey i like the nova...i get some awesome sounds out of it...dont like the MC505...and i had a MC303 for awhile ugh!! that is just terrible...unless you r a DJ and/or want to sound like millions of other ppl...

peace
Blank

udenjoe 20.06.2003 06:54 AM

I remember trying out to MC303 years ago. Didn't care for it. Sent it back for the Akai 20 something phrase sampler. Didn't care for it, although it has alot of potential now that I think back. I finally got the mpc 2000. Great. Although it took me a week to figure it out. Years later I was still learning new things.

That was the beginning of my electronic music experience.

Blank 20.06.2003 09:39 AM

how long ago was that? i starting my electronic music, in like 96 i think...

Hmm, not sure if really can be considered gear, but anyways....

ReBirth. Installed it, played 'round with it a bit and then what? It's been collecting dust on my shelf ever since.

Blank 20.06.2003 12:23 PM

now a dayz that is considered gear...since its all software anywayz(still think that line has some BS in it), why didnt u use it?

peace
Blank

Tomer=Trance 20.06.2003 02:17 PM

i wonder why some other soft synth maker company didnt buy the rebirth base from that reason company and use it to make an improved tb clone, its one of the best tb303 software clone out there

Blank 20.06.2003 02:24 PM

u know that is a damn good question...u see that copy thing everywhere from company to company but not with rebirth...maybe propellerheads didnt want to sell it..?

I dont know if they would have im sure there would be an awesome one right now!!

i really like the nova...i worked with my friends nova in australia...before the new os, mmm, not quite there...but after the new os, i dont what they did to it, but it worked......ive been lookin for a cheap second hand one over here in japan.....

the most regretable synth i bought would have to be the JX305...basicly a MC505 with a few extra sounds and a keyboard.....i dont use the sounds at all now, but the keyboard i really like....good responsive after touch, and quite a good feel......so so sequencer too......good contoller! expensive controller!!! oh well..

Machinegunjoe 20.06.2003 06:54 PM

I think the nova is ok, and i understand ppl who like it. But it wasn't for me you know...i gave it a chance, sold it and bought a Virus instead! But i really think that the nova lacks brilliance...but i think my virus does to when i compare it to my nord...oh anyway

Blank 20.06.2003 11:12 PM

well Machinegunjoe to help us understand what do u mean by brilliance? that can discribe so much on a synth...

Hmm, lack of interest to learn a new toy at that moment I guess. Haven't really found any use for it since. Probably would if I sat down and learn't how to use it properly but for now it'll remain on the shelf.

TommyS 20.06.2003 11:37 PM

I would say the sound from a nord has more clarityand fidelty compared to a virus. But the virus is still good. :D

Hollowcell 21.06.2003 05:31 AM

the nord lacks the programming capabilitys though......i do love my nord though.....just inputs and few other things would be nice......

if i have to compare, nord, virus and nova though.....id say they all have a place......the unique sounds on each are very difficult (virtually impossible) to get on the others......

Blank 21.06.2003 07:03 AM

I would definitely say that Hollowcell...they all have their own little aspects to them...which is why all those companies r still around...otherwise if one was able to do what the other could then it would be a waist to buy the other synths, but i often see all of them in studios together...

Blank

Machinegunjoe 21.06.2003 07:31 PM

Hey Blank

As tommy said the clarity of the sound. I really love my Virus, but the nord is just unbeatable if you want a really clear type of sound.

Im really happy that i have a couple of different VAs cuz they all sound different.

TommyS 21.06.2003 08:09 PM

I think the Virus and Nord are made for each other.

I like to have a fat dirty sequence going on the Virus while a crisp sequence on the nord slowly comes up behind it.

They really work well together I think. :D

Blank 21.06.2003 11:03 PM

Man u guys need to stop teasing me....I so so so so so want a nord...well one day ill get it...

peace
Blank

Hollowcell 22.06.2003 03:25 AM

hey tommys, thats the whole reason ive ordered the virus...i want the dirt the virus can bring....im glad u think think the nord and the virus go well together...i havent heard them side by side yet...i was really hoping they would fit together.....

blank.....hehehe...we all have a nord and u dont.....a bit childish, i know, but ive gotta feel powerfull somewhere!!!

Blank 22.06.2003 03:26 AM

its fine ill get mine in time...unless u guys have an extra u care to give away...j/k

Back to crappy synths.

My Casio CZ-3000. I wish I never bought the thing especially when I look back and think of the Juno sitting on the shelve above it.

But hey that was 10 years ago, didn't know half as much as I know now and stoned out my nut so anything would have sounded cool at the time.

Anyone want to take it off my hands.

Machinegunjoe 22.06.2003 02:16 PM

I had a Cz1000...it made pretty cool basses. Other than that it sucked

spacecorn 24.06.2003 11:16 PM

Casio keyboard that suuuuuuuuucked!!! I mean I wanted a synth and i got a preset keyboard...
It costed me like 600$ I think and it was my first buy.
I tried to get the money back, but they fucked me over.
But then the store went out of buisness HAHAHAHA DAMN YOU!!!! DAMN YOU TO HELLLL!!!!!!

Quasimidi Quasar + 2 expansion cards
Costed me like 800$ and it sounded almost good in the store.
But at home, I tried to use it in my songs, well mission impossible!!!
It sounded like something from 1991 and not in a good nostalgic way.
It just had 10000 really cheezy and badly sampled...samples.
For example 3000 moog resonated sounds... that all sounded like a cheap sample CD.

KB City right??? They really sucked, heard their owner stole all the money and took off

A Virus/Indigo, a Nord 2, a good analogue monosynth and a good drum machine is all you need to make great sounds and hopefully great tracks!

Now for my moment of power.....

Personally I think dance music in general would be greatly enhanced if people started using analog mono's again. You can hear bass done on a polyphonic VA synth from a mile off....and it just doesnt do anything for me......lacks depth and punch. Hehehe thats why I got a Pro-One......NOW I FEEL POWERFUL LMAO!!!

*Hollowcell, what kinda music are you currently making?

DS

Tomer=Trance 28.06.2003 10:03 AM

i agree
analogs rock :D (not just mono's)
thats why im thinking of geting me a little juno

udenjoe 28.06.2003 11:59 AM

I saw an Akai VX600 on sale at synthsite.com that I regret not buying.

at the moment....ive been getting into slow breaks....technical rythms with a dark feel.........but strangely, the last 2 songs ive finished have been disco house and abstract 4 beat house! but really thats the closest they come to a catorgory!

oh yeh another new one ive done..is an electronic rock song.....using real drum samples, no synths and strings and guitars.....gotta love electronic music....u can almost make what ever u want!

but really, this should be on another topic.....sorry guys!

unio mystica 07.07.2003 06:54 AM

My first "synth": Roland EG-101

It?s sooooooooooooooo Terrible. The sounds are useless. Used for a month and tradet it to Orbit (which has a few very fat sounds/samples). Very good trade.

subtractive 15.07.2003 01:21 PM

I think my worst synth (not that you can call them synths) is anything by E-mu. I will never buy a sample playback machine again.

flexoffset 31.01.2004 06:42 PM

Drum Machines: Boss Dr Rhythm DR-110 and then a Korg DDD-5
Bought 'em both new between 1986 and 1987, I think.

Man, those things sound like crap.

nrgy 01.02.2004 11:32 AM

I bought a 2nd hand yamaha a4000, sold it for the same price after two days

I quickly found out that software samples where much better for my own use. :D

I suppose that all "sample playback" machines aren't that bad. A Roland XV 5080 sounds really good, but maybe isn't the machine for trance leads...

picato 03.02.2004 03:50 PM

My first synth was an ensoniq SQ-1. I would say a totaly useless synth module from the eighties. But I supose you gotta start somewhere...

MADSTATION 03.02.2004 07:52 PM

fr-777. Barely use it!

3o3 03.02.2004 08:45 PM

I'd probably go for the Yamaha AN1x or Novation Basstation.

MADSTATION: why dont your FR-777, lovely filter section in it.

I'd also like to know. Only useable thing is the sequencer and that's it.
