How about a modular synth?

Any experiences?

I wouldn't go to anything VA, analog, etc, because you really lack good sample based sounds. You should try to priorise the GAS targets. If you now get a PCM synth you can cope extremely well with the mixture of samplings and synthetic sounds, but if you get a modular of some sort you'll have loads of pure synthetic sounds but nothing sampled and that's a bad restriction.

Good point.

Yup. A way too common error for many HW users that they get only VA's. Better to get first as wide spectrum of sounds as possible and then start "layering".

Wow, you are speaking like a trance producer...

A trance producer would buy only JP80X0's and then go around internet forums asking how to create piano sounds with supersaws.

Try to explain that to a trance producer. You'll get about the same feeling you get when trying to explain to a teenaged newbie drummer that Dream Theater is not progressive rock.

Edit:

Trancer 1: How can I get nice full and fat piano sound with supersaws?
The expert: Well, a realistic piano sound is impposible to create with simple subtractive synthesis.
Trancer 1: You don't know anything! A friend of mine told that my JP can do any sound with supersaws and my friend has been producing trance for two months now so I think he know a little better than you do!
The expert: No. Believe me. It's impossible.
Trancer 2: Hello Trancer 1. How's hangin'? And by the way Expert, you're full of shit!
Trance 1: Hello Trancer 2. Do you have any supersaws pianos?
Trancer 2: Yeah!
*Trancer 2 sends a LP-filtered short decay supersaw patch to Trancer 1*
Trancer 1: Cool. Thanx. You rulz. This sounds so cool! The best piano I've ever heard!
